The protagonist is portrayed as an embecilelic 12 year old whining emo drama queen

One second after was pretty good.
This book, however, was downright PAINFUL.
The main character is pretty good with civil war history, drinking, smoking, being dramatic, and being totally bewildered by the most obvious issues.
EVERYTHING is a source of over the top emotional drama.
Overall: Very painful to listen too

CON:
The main character (Daryl) should stay home and watch Lifetime Originals while engaging in his usual contemplation sessions.
Seriously, he hasn't made a good decision yet. When his own wife yells at him to man up and DO something, he puts his face in his hands and searches his soul for hints that she may be right.
This would be fine if his character was supposed to be some emo searching for meaning while living in his mom's basement, but this guy is supposed to be the smart hero prepper guy. The guy must not have learned any skill that matter.
PRO:
Whenever lives are on the line, and quick decisive action is required, you can absolutely count on this guy to think back on his last argument with his wife, and wonder if maybe she WAS right when she called him out for being such a wuss.

Good overall story, except the main character. I kept hoping she would mature a little and quit acting like such a self centered spoiled brat. I wanted to like her and root for her, but she just kept getting worse. It got to the point where I was hoping she would get a good spanking, or at least run away.
All said and done, I think this series must have been written to appeal to narcissist children.

Story
In 48 hours, the Earth will be hit by a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the sun, a "Carrington Event" that has the power to shut down and possibly destroy the world's electrical infrastructure. To try and prevent permanent damage, everything goes dark prior to the hit: Global communications are shut down; hospital emergency generators are disconnected; the entire internet, media broadcasting, and cell phone systems are turned off. Will the world's population successfully defend itself in the wake of the CME, or will mass panic lead to the breakdown of society as we know it?

Reader sounds like a PBS jazz critic. Super soft slow voice. As a result, so do all the characters.
The protagonists are too stupid for words. Actually, they are too stupid to have survived puberty. Despite overwhelming evidence (including outright direct warnings), they while away their precious time seeking out even more evidence. All this time, all they have to do is drive into the best possible shelter...and they have known access to it. Nope...they just keep using their incredibly annoying PBS thought patterns and related voices to bemoan not having enough information to make the most clear cut and decision that has ZERO potential downside. Just GO to the damn shelter!
OMG: They seriously taught me to hateful.
...deep breaths...ok...im fine now
Just don't make the same mistake these idiots (and I) made. Pass on this one

Pearce did his usual great job, but the story was terrible. The characters were so frustratingly stupid, I felt like I was listening to 50 plus hours of Abbott and Costelo meet Lucy and Ethel during the cyborg induced apocalypse.
Good Luck
