I like how this book is such a classic Christie, but at the same time is the author’s own story. And I’m glad there are some new Hercules Poirot books too!

I still wonder how much of this book is fiction and how much is real history, but it was an enjoyable listen. It makes me want to know more about one of the main characters. I also like how the author set up this book.

As beautiful as it may be, their friends’ country house is not where Lady Vespasia wishes to spend Christmas with her new husband, Victor Narraway. She’d have preferred a relaxing holiday at home with him - especially as Victor, former head of the London Special Branch, seems to be hiding undercover dealings with the other guests who have gathered at the spacious estate.

not a bad story
Reviewed: 01-18-22
This is a good story although Perry Mason might be a bit tough for my taste. I'm sure if that toughness was because of the times when this book was written and what was popular then. This novel is not quite noir but leans in that direction. It's an easy listen and overall a good story with a surprising ending. The narrator didn't do a bad job except with women. I think his voice is too deep to portray women.

To lay out the pitfalls of family holidays. The dos and don'ts, the highs and lows. In doing so, they are sharing some of their best anecdotes.

The ending was a little weak but overall I really enjoyed this story. I like the tension the author built and the post US civil war setting. It is definitely more of a thriller than a mystery. The author did a good job of making the story hang on a thread until near the end of the book

Story
A fascinating account of the world’s most famous disease - polio - told as you have never heard it before. Epidemics of paralysis began to rage in the early 1900s, seemingly out of nowhere. Doctors, parents, and health officials were at a loss to explain why this formerly unheard-of disease began paralyzing so many children. Why did this disease start to become such a horrible problem during the late 1800s? Why did it affect children more often than adults? Why was it originally called teething paralysis by mothers and their doctors?

I found this book very informative and eye opening. I looked up the authors other books, many on vaccines, and I am curious now about his view point. Although he makes no direct reference in this book to that viewpoint, I wonder how he feels about vaccines in general. I did find the subject of polio and enjoy environmental factors fascinating and most likely true. I don’t know enough about the subject to say either way. The best part about this book was the info and it does make you think about diseases and environmental factors. It also makes you think about humans and our reactions to diseases.
