Fluff read

Good story about nothing. The idea is tried and true BUT the story arc is so old and the characters were juvenile. World class or universe class assassins who somehow make elementary mistakes. Repeatedly their opponents commit their own acts/tactics against them. I KNEW the killers had reversed tracked the daughter, I KNEW her shoe was a bomb..This guy who could kill everyone in the room with a thought and is a telekinetic is too stupid to realize a discarded shoe is a bomb and has a prisoner in a cage with her hands free? He could not zop the shoe up and out of the space or encapsulate it in a null space? lol. Two top notch assassins each confront someone only to be blindsided by someone behind them? It was elemtary mistakes like this that had me giving 3 stars. More and more it appears juvenile story lines are written by people who either have an audience with the maturity of 14-16 year olds or they themselves are stuck there. Still, I just bought these as a respite from listening to research/technical writing so it was a nothing read. I will not pursue this authors work but there IS an audience for this.

Story
Hugh d'Ambray, Preceptor of the Iron Dogs, Warlord of the Builder of Towers, served only one man. Now his immortal, nearly omnipotent master has cast him aside. Hugh is a shadow of the warrior he was, but when he learns that the Iron Dogs, soldiers who would follow him anywhere, are being hunted down and murdered, he must make a choice: to fade away or to be the leader he was born to be. Hugh knows he must carve a new place for himself and his people, but they have no money, no shelter, and no food, and the necromancers are coming. Fast.

I have listened to this dozens of times cuz I travel along. I'm a huge Illona Andrews fan of the Kate Daniel's ilk as well as the Kinsmen Universe. Now I
a Hugh and Ilara fan. The story line and arc was interesting though I want a prequel on what Ilara is and how she became that way . I also missed the part where these 2 actually fall in love. I want to know why Ilara is so Jing up on " the children" it was a tad annoying as was the many times Hugh said darling. Most Illona Andrew books leave me with a cut abd dried for the moment HEA. This one did not. I was waiting for the moment Hugh realized he loved her and he began his redemption tour and also I wished the fight with Ness as she retrieved Hugh had been in more detail as I'm trying to get a visual fir what she is. All in all a very good read, and since I listened to it so many times, I even got used to Hugh's slightly jerky sneer voice.
