Story
Why we think it’s a great listen: A masterpiece like none other, Brooks’ powerful performance of Haley’s words has been known to leave listeners in tears. It begins with a birth in an African village in 1750, and ends two centuries later at a funeral in Arkansas. And in that time span, an unforgettable cast of men, women, and children come to life, many of them based on the people from Alex Haley's own family tree.

Beautiful example of the power of oral tradition

This makes me want to research my Cherokee ancestry. My only wish is that I learned more about what happened to certain characters, specifically family, who were left behind when the story moved on to follow the story of someone who was sold, but after getting to the end, it makes sense that this might have disrupted the flow of the story, in addition to practical considerations of whether Haley was able to research those people.

I don't know much about the content of the stories, because I just wanted something to help me fall asleep.

Story
When a Kentucky farmer is forced to sell two slaves to a plantation owner, it becomes a turning point in the lives of both slaves. For Eliza, it's one of escape - a harrowing flight north with her young son. For Uncle Tom, sent down the Mississippi River, it's a more certain fate, as he struggles to survive against the brutal exploitation of his traders.

This book had a powerful ending. I would have liked more about Simon LaGree's fate, but the book certainly is a classic that helped shape our nation. It also holds important lessons for today's society.
