Story
We should have known the end was near. So begins Imbolo Mbue’s powerful second novel, How Beautiful We Were. Set in the fictional African village of Kosawa, it tells of a people living in fear amid environmental degradation wrought by an American oil company. Pipeline spills have rendered farmlands infertile. Children are dying from drinking toxic water. Promises of cleanup and financial reparations to the villagers are made - and ignored. The country’s government, led by a brazen dictator, exists to serve its own interests.

This book I liked very much. First of all there were different voices for the various characters. Their monologues were excellent. Having different voices made it easy to listen to. The story centers around an African village where oil is discovered by the west. With the village people and the life they had at the center of what is a well told tell. Excellent!

The dog fight stood out. Preparing for the storm also. She used a lot of methods, analogies and symbols. Maybe too many until towards the end. Like something one is eating and doesn't realize how good it is until it is almost gone. Deserves another listen.

This story reminded me of many of my struggles during the 1970's and 80's. I found myself waiting on the moment when everything improved; in their life and mine. Much of the harm done early in life can never be repaired. It is amazing how much of the conversations and thoughts between people are recounted. This story is a realistic account of poverty, and the power of one's surroundings.

Story
Following her retirement from Princeton University, celebrated historian Dr. Nell Irvin Painter surprised everyone in her life by returning to school - in her 60s - to earn a BFA and MFA in painting. In Old in Art School, she travels from her beloved Newark to the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design; finds meaning in the artists she loves, even as she comes to understand how they may be undervalued; and struggles with the unstable balance between the pursuit of art and the inevitable, sometimes painful, demands of a life fully lived.

Story
First published in 1979, The White Album records indelibly the upheavals and aftermaths of the 1960s. Examining key events, figures, and trends of the era - including Charles Manson, the Black Panthers, and the shopping mall - through the lens of her own spiritual confusion, Joan Didion helped to define mass culture as we now understand it. Written with a commanding sureness of tone and linguistic precision, The White Album is a central example of American reportage and a classic of American autobiography.

I really enjoyed this title and was prepared to go on to Book II. Then I decided to listen to the sample because the cover has changed. The narrator has changed. I believe I will pass on this audio version and just read the ebook.
It is the experience of listening while reading along that is important to me. When the voice changes so does the experience.

Story
Thelonious Monk is the critically acclaimed, gripping saga of an artist's struggle to "make it" without compromising his musical vision. It is a story that, like its subject, reflects the tidal ebbs and flows of American history in the 20th century. To his fans, he was the ultimate hipster; to his detractors, he was temperamental, eccentric, taciturn, or childlike. His angular melodies and dissonant harmonies shook the jazz world to its foundations, ushering in the birth of "bebop" and establishing Monk as one of America's greatest composers.

The author assumes that everyone is familiar with New York city. I found I had to consult maps to get an understanding of where Greenwich Village is, or the Bronx, Brooklyn and so forth. Otherwise the book is very informative about the life of Monk. Although Monk had a reputation of being eccentric it seems that he normal in many ways that did not fit his public image.

Story
Experience a bold take on this classic autobiography as it’s performed by Oscar-nominated Laurence Fishburne. In this searing classic autobiography, originally published in 1965, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and Black empowerment activist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Human Rights movement. His fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American dream and the inherent racism in a society that denies its non-White citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time.

This audio book is very informative about the life of Malcolm X. However, the voice is always angry making it appear that Malcolm stayed angry all the time. Maybe he did. But the anger obscures the message. Worth listening to for historical and informational purposes.

Published during a literary era marked by the ascendance of Black writers such as Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison, James Baldwin, and Alex Haley, this thinly fictionalized account of Claude Brown’s childhood as a hardened, streetwise criminal trying to survive the toughest streets of Harlem has been heralded as the definitive account of everyday life for the first generation of African Americans raised in the Northern ghettos of the 1940s and 1950s.
