Story
Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

A time the world forgot…..

This was a gripping book. Having listened to it as an audible book made it come alive. It was a difficult story to process and stayed with me after my time of listening was over for the day. I picked it right back up the next morning. Although I was in high school and later college, I remember the news and how the deaths and tragic events were downplayed by news networks. The author was correct in her view that our generation was the last to fully believe what our parents and especially our government was telling us. This is a gripping play by play of realities of the nurses 18 hour days covered in mud and blood and monsoon rain. And once coming home the medical establishments didn’t recognize their skills and treated them like candy stripers and they were told “ there were no women in Vietnam Nam”. If Hollywood wants to made a horror film, his should be a movie.

It’s not always a Rescue

This story like most McFadden stories grabs you from the beginning. At times I wished it would move a little faster in some of the internal dialog, but overall it’s a good page turner.

When retired Jill Parker wins an all-expenses paid Mediterranean cruise for two she is thrilled! At 63 life in retirement has got a little bit bland for Jill and this might be just the holiday she and husband Eddy need to get the sparks back in their marriage. But when Eddy admits he would much prefer to build his patio and look through the latest DIY magazine, Jill is left with only one other option – her sister Diana. Diana has become rather reclusive since her husband, Caspar died, but perhaps this is the push she needs to bring some excitement back into her life, too?

2 best friends on holiday

Not at all what I was expecting. More like reading a friend’s diary on their trip abroad. Minimal romance, no heart pacing action or drama. Easy to listen to and fall asleep with rather than jolting yourself awake to hear what happens next! Just a reveal into two ordinary women who go on holiday together.
