I just wish the wonderful book did not end so soon. I did not want to say goodbye to any of the characters. It is an important novel with an important message and of course it is beautifully written.

The Montoyas are used to a life without explanations. They know better than to ask why the pantry never seems to run low, or why their matriarch won’t ever leave their home in Four Rivers - not for graduations, weddings, or baptisms. But when Orquídea Divina invites them to her funeral and to collect their inheritance, they hope to learn the secrets that she has held onto so tightly their whole lives. Instead, Orquídea is transformed into a ceiba tree, leaving them with more questions than answers.

I really enjoyed reading this book and found it hard to put down. I loved its mystical quality. At times I found it hard to keep track of the characters, but I did get to know them better as the story progressed. I was not at all disappointed.

Story
In the 1960s, the world’s attention was focused on a nail-biting race against time: the international campaign to save a dozen ancient Egyptian temples from drowning in the floodwaters of the gigantic new Aswan High Dam. But the coverage of this unprecedented rescue effort completely overlooked the daring French archaeologist who made it all happen. Without the intervention of Christiane Desroches-Noblecourt, the temples—including the Temple of Dendur, now at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art—would currently be at the bottom of a vast reservoir.

I couldn’t put this book down. It was well written, and engrossing. I love Egypt and have seen many of the sites talked about in the book, but I hadn’t known so many details about the history and the discovery. I wish I had read this book many years ago.

Story
Boyd Varty had an unconventional upbringing. He grew up on Londolozi Game Reserve in South Africa, a place where man and nature strive for balance, where perils exist alongside wonders. Founded more than 80 years ago as a hunting ground, Londolozi was transformed into a nature reserve beginning in 1973 by Varty’s father and uncle, visionaries of the restoration movement. But it wasn’t just a sanctuary for the animals; it was also a place for ravaged land to flourish again and for the human spirit to be restored.

Kjell of Jeru had always known who he was. He'd never envied his brother or wanted to be king. He was the bastard son of the late King Zoltev and a servant girl, and the ignominy of his birth had never bothered him. But there is more to this man than his parentage. More to this man than his blade, his size, or his skills, and all that Kjell once knew has shifted and changed. He is no longer simply Kjell of Jeru, a warrior defending the crown. Now he is a healer, one of the Gifted, and a man completely at odds with his power.

Loved everything except for the horrible music
Reviewed: 11-08-21
The story and narration are excellent. The music and sound effects were distracting and overpowering. I hated them. I wish I could have a copy of this audiobook minus the music. It was a horrible distraction and ruined the performance for me. Please remake this book with the music removed.

This was a delightful book and I loved listening to it. My only criticism is that the mispronunciation of some of the Spanish words felt very jarring to me. But as a whole I really enjoyed this magical book.My husband was a Flamenco Guitarist so the emphasis on music felt very close to home.

In her mesmerizing fourth work of fiction, Sue Monk Kidd takes an audacious approach to history and brings her acclaimed narrative gifts to imagine the story of a young woman named Ana. Raised in a wealthy family with ties to the ruler of Galilee, she is rebellious and ambitious, with a brilliant mind and a daring spirit. She engages in furtive scholarly pursuits and writes narratives about neglected and silenced women. Ana is expected to marry an older widower, a prospect that horrifies her. An encounter with 18-year-old Jesus changes everything.
