Story
Wren Embervale, alchemist-turned-assassin, finds solace in only one thing: seeking vengeance for the death of her friends. The wars of the past may be over, but her thirst for revenge is far from quenched. For years, she has been content with her poisons and potions for company, but when an unknown form of alchemy is used to attack a king of the midrealms, Wren’s time in the shadows comes to an end. She’s offered a place at the ancient alchemy academy of Drevenor to find a cure to the dark magic threatening the kingdoms. To win her spot, she must conquer the Gauntlet.

Adventure-filled romantasy!
Reviewed: 02-25-25
What’s it about?
Wren is eager to for a letter of recommendation to train as an alchemist. She also happens to be a royal who uses her skills to poison those who committed heinous acts in the war.
Torj is war sword, one of just a handful of powerful warriors left in existence. And he has history with Wren. She saved his life in the war with her lightning and left him with magical marks.
Now someone is going after royals and Torj must be Wren’s bodyguard as she enters alchemy training. Things get deadly and heated, and soon their forbidden romance takes flame.
My thoughts:
This romantasy was absolutely fantastic. It had all the best things: a strong FMC who knows her own mind and strength. A sexy MMC bodyguard who was definitely Henry Cavill in The Witcher. I’m just saying.
Fabulous chemistry, high stakes challenges, wonderful friendships. It was giving Fourth Wing without dragons, and I was living for it. Plus the touch her and die moments were everything.
I am bummed about that cliffhanger though. When do we get the next one?

Fun, spicy Cinderella influenced story

What’s it about?
In this Cinderella influenced story, Birdie wants to escape the clutches of her tyrannical stepmother, and she’s willing to do anything–even go up for a bridal auction. But that also means leaving the woman she’s in love with: her step sister Violet. But Violet refuses to let this end tragically, and approaches her wealthy ex, Alaric, to win Birdie’s auction. Feelings get all twisted up, and soon Birdie, Violet, and Alaric find themselves in a confusing mess of shared feelings.
My thoughts:
First, I loved the audiobook version of this story. It was expertly narrated by Stephen Borne, Michelle Sparks, and Angelina Rocca. It’s also quite short at 4.5 hours, so I flew right through it. I got all the things I love about a Sara Cate story in a quick burst.
I really enjoyed the characters in this book. Birdie, who is only 19, has a sort of endearing innocence despite the hard life she’s lived. And I love that Violet defies her despicable mother and sister and stands up for what’s right. Alaric has some morally gray tendencies that I would have liked to learn more about. But I always love a MMC who would burn down the world for the woman, or in this case, women he loves.
Great, quick listen with a some fun spice and great resolution.

Charming Dublin expat Michael Kelly runs the most popular Irish pub in Southie. But no crowd of high-tipping revelers has ever been as welcome a sight as that of Leigh walking through his door. A great new take on vampires
Reviewed: 08-27-24
This was such a fun and interesting read. I feel like the title undersells it a little, because although the hot best friend is definitely an Irish vampire, this story is much more than surface deep. It's a great dive into history and Irish folklore twisted up with vampires, ravens, and the Morrigan. I loved listening to the romance bloom, and getting a glimpse into the vampire politics. The narration was spectacular! 10/10 for both Andria Mae and Jake McAskill.

Story
After watching my mother succumb to a mysterious illness, I promised myself two things. I'd find the cure for what ravaged her and leave the godforsaken city where she abandoned me. Four years later, I received an acceptance letter from Dracadia University, one of the oldest most prestigious schools in the country. Nestled on a secluded island off the coast of Maine, it's rumored to be haunted by the souls of the mental patients exiled there centuries before, those whose bones are said to make up the island's white sandy shores. And restless ghosts aren't even its most daunting peculiarity.

Jilted at the altar, heartbroken Scotland "Scottie" Holiday feels utterly conned by her supposed Prince Charming. Sweet courtroom romcom

🏰 What’s it about?
When Scottie is left at the altar, she spirals. And as she struggles with her dentist career she comes to the conclusion that all her woes began with her infatuation with the fairy tale princes of her childhood movies. And thus, the creator of those movies, Kingston Company (ala Disney) is the true villain for setting up unrealistic expectations. And so, with the help of her lawyer friend, they pursue a case against the company.
When Harrison, a lawyer for Kingston, is assigned the case he is irritated that he’s been handed a throwaway lawsuit… until it’s not. And when Harrison shows up to court he’s greeted by the plaintiff: Scottie, the woman he connected with in running club.
Over the course of hearings and time in the court room (and outside run ins), these two get to know more about one another and slowly adversity turns to attraction.
♥️ My thoughts:
🎧 I listened to this one on audio and both narrators did a great job of performing this story!
This one is super sweet. I enjoyed reading how Scottie compared all of her past doomed romances to fairy tale princes, some hilariously so. I also enjoyed the deep dive into the original fairy tales and how they were altered to be more palatable.
At first I lifted an eyebrow at someone suing a movie company for her personal relationship pain, but I appreciated how many characters called this out as ludicrous. And yet, it still worked!
Harrison’s backstory tugs at the heart and I loved watching his character growth throughout the story. I also adored Scottie’s dad.
😍 Also, we all need a best friend who will champion us during life’s tough times, and Payton is most certainly that.
💎 I wish we got a bit more romance page time, but overall a sweet, heart tugging romcom perfect for Disney lovers!

Kylin is a mortal living in land where elves protect the mortals from vampires. And then she meets a mysterious man while on vacation. After a brief tryst, she travels home, only for him to send a gift to show up again.
One fateful night she’s nearly killed and rescued by her mystery man, Theo, only to learn that he’s not what he seems.
Soon Kylin is caught between the warring elves and vampires and questioning everything she thought she knew. And if that’s not difficult enough, now her heart is on the line.
My thoughts:
I thought the premise of this one was very good. The setup of vampires vs. elves was unique. From the beginning the story grabbed me immediately (we love a mystery man and a curvy heroine).
From there the story moves very quickly. There isn’t much “down time” in this book, jumping from action point to action point, which made it a quick read.
I do wish we could have seen more of Kylin’s developing relationships with everyone: her guard, the vampire king, Emily. Because of the pacing she had to jump into every relationship quickly and we didn’t get a feel of why she learned to trust certain characters.
That being said, I adore the female friendships in this book! When women work together and great things happen—that’s my favorite!
Overall this was a fun new world to jump into.

Interesting and quick alien romance
Reviewed: 04-30-24
What’s it about?
In this alien romance we have star lords — who are horned, aliens— and star maids—those marked at birth and destined for these aliens as kind of slave consorts.
But one alien man, Rylec, is different and makes his maid, Inez, his star wife, joining his power with her so she can use it too. But that made her a target.
Now, years later, after he helped Inez escape, he needs her to come back to save their daughter from the cruel empress.
My thoughts:
I knew going in that I was getting alien romance, and I dig the big, muscled man with horns sharing his magic with his fragile human wife and going against the power structure to do so. Go Rylec!
This book sort of felt like it started in the middle of the story though. I looked it up to make sure it wasn’t a book 2, but it’s not. And while it definitely keeps the book pace fast, I was confused on some details.
That being said, this was still a fun, fast audiobook, and the narrator does a fantastic job.
