I enjoyed Steven Roley's " Guncle" and was so excited that he wrote the second book. in the first book I became so invested in the characters because he developed them so well. To have the opportunity to spend more time with them was a treat, after 5 years had passed. Fell in love with GUP and how he navigates not only his life changes, but the bittersweet realization that children grow up too fast.

Story
As the child of a Hooters waitress and an ex-pro wrestler, Margo Millet's always known she’d have to make it on her own. So she enrolls at her local junior college, even though she can’t imagine how she’ll ever make a living. She’s still figuring things out and never planned to have an affair with her English professor—and while the affair is brief, it isn’t brief enough to keep her from getting pregnant. Despite everyone’s advice, she decides to keep the baby, mostly out of naiveté and a yearning for something bigger.

I am a sucker for a happy ending. I didn't feel like it was inevitable as there were so many "what ifs" that kept it interesting. Enjoyed the protagonist's spirit and determination inspire of her circumstances and occasions of self-doubt.

Story
They say behind every great man, there's a woman. In this case, there are three. Stella Crater, the judge's wife, is the picture of propriety draped in long pearls and the latest Chanel. Ritzi, a leggy showgirl with Broadway aspirations, thinks moonlighting in the judge's bed is the quickest way off the chorus line. Maria Simon, the dutiful maid, has the judge to thank for her husband's recent promotion to detective in the NYPD. Meanwhile, Crater is equally indebted to Tammany Hall leaders and the city's most notorious gangster, Owney "The Killer" Madden.

I read Frozen River and decided to try her older novel. the complexity of the novels is complex and engaging. suggestion: read the author's notes before reading the novel. it helped understand the author's mixing of fact, conjecture and creative license.

Story
After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. It’s been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy can’t remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life.

As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Admirable female protagonist

This is the first time I read a book NY this author. initially I did not care for chapters labeled "12 years before" followed by chapters "occurring in present tense" I longed for it to have a smooth chronology rather than the back and forth. After I completed the book,I listened to the author's notes which helped me appreciate the author's style of story telling.

Story
Mi-ja and Young-sook, two girls living on the Korean island of Jeju, are best friends who come from very different backgrounds. When they are old enough, they begin working in the sea with their village’s all-female diving collective, led by Young-sook’s mother. As the girls take up their positions as baby divers, they know they are beginning a life of excitement and responsibility but also danger. This beautiful, thoughtful novel illuminates a world turned upside down, one where the women are in charge, engaging in dangerous, physical work, and the men take care of the children.

While this story centers around life events of the main character, the author weaves historical events and the devastating effects of war and occupation of a small seaside community. The culture of this small seaside community is progressive compared with our culture's patriarchy.

Story
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.
