Story
Separated by 10 years, 3,000 miles, and the unrelenting stresses of adulthood, best friends Janet and Serena plan a 40th birthday girls’ trip to reconnect. But after a massive crash, they’re the only survivors to wash ashore on an uncharted Caribbean Island. Armed with only the clothes on their backs and zero survival skills, they fight to overcome hunger, thirst, deadly wildlife—and most terrifyingly—decades of accrued resentment. I only try on one of Nina’s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it’s like. But she soon finds out...and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it’s far too late. But I reassure myself: The Winchesters don’t know who I really am. They don’t know what I’m capable of....

I usually exclusively read Afro sci-fi or sci-fi/fantasy books (think Octavia Buttler). There are no other genres I’ve read in the past 10 years. I made an exception for this book, because I couldn’t find anything else. I’m so glad I did. I have a new favorite author and have read through this specific trilogy in a month. I’m a little late to the party, but I’m ecstatic to find that Frida has what looks like an endless supply of books shes written. I’m hoping they’re all as good as this one. I couldn’t put it down. The very last book in the trilogy was my least favorite but still nicely written. Please make more Mille and/or Cece inspired books.

Story
In the holy city of Tova, the winter solstice is usually a time for celebration and renewal, but this year it coincides with a solar eclipse, a rare celestial even proscribed by the Sun Priest as an unbalancing of the world. Meanwhile, a ship launches from a distant city bound for Tova and set to arrive on the solstice. The captain of the ship, Xiala, is a disgraced Teek whose song can calm the waters around her as easily as it can warp a man’s mind. Her ship carries one passenger.

It’s interesting

It took me a while to get into this book. The first chapter is shocking and can be harsh to listen to especially if you have kids. The book does have themes of child abuse.
Other than that, by chapter 7, I was hooked because of all the other storylines that was weaved into the story. It’s a very neat fantasy book with themes I’ve never heard of before. It reminds me of Native American folklore a little.
Whoever started narrating in the 15th chapter almost killed the book for me. I almost turned it off. The voice is flat when he’s not trying to imitate a character. It was a mood killer. The book is worth looking into. I will be reading the 2nd book.

Even better than book 1
Reviewed: 06-12-23
If the words, “and the plot thickens” were a book, this would be it! Book two added depth and background to the story. There is nothing like a strong female lead. In this one, there are several.
I don’t like all of the death. It can get just the right amount of dark. I guess I’m saying that I’m hoping for a happily ever after in the next book and less “rippings” , but we all know war is coming. Oddly, I’m here for it. Can’t wait for book three.

This book was good. It read a little harsh in the beginning until you got use to the world the author built. Worth the read. I really liked the narrator’s voice. It was incredibly soothing and lolled me to sleep on more than one occasion but not because it was bad or boring.
