Story
Genie's summer is full of surprises. The first is that he and his big brother, Ernie, are leaving Brooklyn for the very first time to spend the summer with their grandparents all the way in Virginia - in the COUNTRY! The second surprise comes when Genie figures out that their grandfather is blind. Thunderstruck, and being a curious kid, Genie peppers Grandpop with questions about how he covers it so well (besides wearing way cool Ray-Bans).

Gives Such a Clear Voice to Adolescents

What a joy to listen to! This story while simple in plot shines light and gives voice to a common African American summer experience. Kudos! Can’t wait to hear more from these rich characters.

Story
She used to work for the US government, but very few people ever knew that. An expert in her field, she was one of the darkest secrets of an agency so clandestine it doesn't even have a name. And when they decided she was a liability, they came for her without warning. Now she rarely stays in the same place or uses the same name for long. They've killed the only other person she trusted, but something she knows still poses a threat. They want her dead, and soon.

Dialogue Unbelievable and lazy characterization of locations
Reviewed: 06-03-19
The overall plot was interesting, however the dialogue between characters seemed one dimensional, predictable, and oversimplified.
As a lifetime resident of the DC MD VA area where much of the books takes place, I took offense to her characterization of certain neighborhoods as good, bad, unsavory, etc. The descriptions seemed to equate the quality of a neighborhood by race alone, which read as extremely lazy and irresponsible in her research. It honestly has alienated me as a reader of her novels moving forward.
