Story
While the Christian tradition has subordinated John the Baptist to Jesus of Nazareth, John himself would likely have disagreed with that ranking. In this eye-opening new book John the Baptist in History and Theology, Joel Marcus makes a powerful case that John saw himself, not Jesus, as the proclaimer and initiator of the kingdom of God and his own ministry as the center of God's saving action in history.

Very Thorough
Reviewed: 01-17-25
Very insightful and useful for those interested in the historical side of John, not just what you’ve always heard in Sunday school. I didn’t realize that Jesus actually learned the Lord’s Prayer from John, as well as many of his other teachings. Definitely worth a read for any scholar (amateur or otherwise) of early Christianity.

Story
The image of the historical Jesus takes form in the words of the Gospel Q. The Lost Gospel Q represents the very first Gospel, older than the traditional Gospels and written by Jesus' contemporaries. It preserves Jesus' original words—the Sermon on the Mount, Beatitudes, the Lord's Prayer, parables, and his counsel for a compassionate life. The original of the Gospel Q was lost for 2,000 years, but for the past 170 years historians and theologians have been digging through the many layers of the New Testament to uncover one of the most remarkable lost Gospels of the Bible.

Excellent resource for the Q-Source sayings, and the translation offered unexpected insights even in sayings we’re all familiar with— like the Lord’s Prayer (a prayer which originated from John the baptizer btw according to Jesus and his disciples’ own words.

Story
Americans debating the fate of slavery often invoked the specter of disunion to frighten their opponents. As Elizabeth R. Varon shows, "disunion" connoted the dissolution of the republic - the failure of the founders' effort to establish a stable and lasting representative government. For many Americans in both the North and the South, disunion was a nightmare, a cataclysm that would plunge the nation into the kind of fear and misery that seemed to pervade the rest of the world.

Excellent, and seems nonpartisan, would definitely recommend to anyone looking for the true catalysts of the civil war.

Story
Christianity didn't have to become the dominant religion in the West. It easily could have remained a sect of Judaism fated to have the historical importance of the Sadducees or the Essenes. In The Triumph of Christianity, Bart Ehrman, a master explainer of Christian history, texts, and traditions, shows how a religion whose first believers were 20 or so illiterate day laborers in a remote part of the empire became the official religion of Rome, converting some 30 million people in just four centuries.

It’s a prequel (shrug)

It’s fine. Many missed opportunities to tell a more interesting story. I expected it to be about the war and founding of the hunger games, but it’s kind of just the first book, with a perspective switch. Kinda like force awakens to a new hope. It’s fine, entertaining, I just wanted to hear more about the lore she’s already created. Also there’s lot of songs in this but the narrator didn’t sing any of it, just kind of awkwardly spoke it. Idk. Worth reading if you care about the canon.
