Story
Daphne always loved the way her fiancé Peter told their story. How they met (on a blustery day), fell in love (over an errant hat), and moved back to his lakeside hometown to begin their life together. He really was good at telling it…right up until the moment he realized he was actually in love with his childhood best friend Petra. Which is how Daphne begins her new story.

Story
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

One of my favorite books of the year

I can’t say enough to describe how rich and nuanced James McBride’s prose are in “The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store” and how the reader, Dominic Hoffman, brought the prose and characters to life. An amazing experience from start to finish…

Annoying
Reviewed: 11-01-22
Maybe I should have read it. The reader’s voice was like nails on a chalk board to me when she portrayed Estalita. Also the portrayal of the main character, Orly was hard to listen to. The book is trite and I’m sorry I wasted my time.

Alix Chamberlain is a woman who gets what she wants and has made a living, with her confidence-driven brand, showing other women how to do the same. So she is shocked when her babysitter, Emira Tucker, is confronted while watching the Chamberlains' toddler one night, walking the aisles of their local high-end supermarket. The store's security guard, seeing a young Black woman out late with a White child, accuses Emira of kidnapping two-year-old Briar. A small crowd gathers, a bystander films everything, and Emira is furious and humiliated. Alix resolves to make things right.

Thank Goodness I was Stuck on a Long Drive with Nothing Else to Do
Reviewed: 03-07-21
I am shocked that 13,000 readers have listened to this book. I couldn’t get into it and found myself rolling my eyes at the cliches that dominated the narrative. The only characters I enjoyed were Emira’s friends. I found the writing to be sophomoric and pretty much felt like I wasted six hours listening.
