Story
The Bell Jar chronicles the crack-up of Esther Greenwood: brilliant, beautiful, enormously talented, and successful but slowly going under - maybe for the last time. Sylvia Plath masterfully draws the reader into Esther's breakdown with such intensity that Esther's insanity becomes completely real and even rational, as probable and accessible an experience as going to the movies. Such deep penetration into the dark and harrowing corners of the psyche is an extraordinary accomplishment and has made The Bell Jar a haunting American classic.

Painful. lots of disturbing visual descriptions.

The unlikable main character made it hard for me to empathize with her mental illness. She seemed to be indifferent and detached from her own emotions and numb to anyone else's. It's beautifully written (more poetry than prose) so goes down sweet but burns when it hits you what is really happened. painful book. the first half is much more interesting than the 2nd in my opinion. I would have skipped this book if I knew if was going to be so gruesome.

Story
Set in the 1950’s Paris of American expatriates, liaisons, and violence, a young man finds himself caught between desire and conventional morality. With a sharp, probing imagination, James Baldwin’s now-classic narrative delves into the mystery of loving and creates a moving, highly controversial story of death and passion that reveals the unspoken complexities of the human heart.

Baldwin: sensational. Butler: great. One caveat.

Hella saves the day!!
Reviewed: 07-05-20
I was so thankful when Hella's character came back on the scene!! Up until then it was dragging... but Hella helped round out the plot and it made more interesting. The writing was heavy in parts and dry in others. overall, I enjoyed it. just know you will have to endure some longer/drier parts before getting to the good stuff!!

Story
Published in 1945, Cannery Row focuses on the acceptance of life as it is: both the exuberance of community and the loneliness of the individual. Drawing on his memories of the real inhabitants of Monterey, California, Steinbeck interweaves the stories of Doc, Henri, Mack and his boys, and the other characters in this world where only the fittest survive, to create a novel that is at once one of his most humorous and most poignant works.

Wonderfully narrated, beautiful characters and poetic writing style. Some parts broke my heart and made me cry, and some made me laugh out loud. I live in Monterey and wasn't expecting much but thought I should at least give it a listen. Steinbeck didn't let me down!

Story
When Lauren Kessler was 12, her ballet instructor crushed not just her dreams of being a ballerina but also her youthful self-assurance. Now, many decades and three children later, Kessler embarks on a journey to join a professional company to perform in The Nutcracker. Raising the Barre is more than just one woman's story; it is a story about shaking things up, taking risks, and ignoring good sense and forgetting how old you are and how you're "supposed" to act.

Meh... and I'm a 40 year old learning ballet!
Reviewed: 06-04-20
Well, you don't really "dance the nutcracker" you "dance IN the nutcracker." My mom and step dad have done it with Pacific Northwest Ballet with NO dance training (in their 50s) so the tittle is a little annoying.
Secondly, there wasn't much she had to overcome (which would have made the plot more interesting) except learning the steps and how to put on makeup (false eyelashes with a handheld mirror).
I DID enjoy hearing about the company and how they went about their classes as well as there inside story of the nutcracker (that was fascinating). I listened to it while washing my dishes and got through the rest.
In other words, it's bearable but just OK.

Story
I had three dirty jobs until I quit them all and married a rich millionaire. Then, I wrote this book in order to teach every woman in the world that it is possible for you to marry a millionaire! If you are a struggling, poor, or middle-class woman that craves "the good life," then you need to learn and understand what the past generations of mothers always told their daughters: "You'll have a lifetime of poverty married to a poor man, and you'll have a lifetime of boredom married to a middle-class man, so marry Mr. Rich."

I gave it 2 stars because the narrator's voice was nice. That was the only positive!
