Story
What if emotional abuse is so hidden that its effects remain unchallenged for decades, masquerading as personal failings? Believing Me is an emotionally gripping memoir that gives language to the hidden and ineffable nature of childhood trauma and how it can imprint on a person, resulting in fractured self-esteem, addictions, perfectionism, and a string of abusive relationships.

genuine and relevant, Excellent book.

the author's experience is such a great example of what complex developmental trauma can do to a child, and how the effects follow the survivors into adulthood, and how the symptoms can be missed by therapists. it was quite the journey how she figured it out and healed, and continua to heal. This is a great book for survivors, and the people who care about them who want to understand.

Story
Yes, Mindy Kaling is the genial Hollywood celebrity who posted twelve selfies from a single Oscar party, but that smile took work. In this hilariously honest essay, Mindy reflects on the social anxiety that she traces back to the slices of white cheese her parents served at her ninth birthday party. Little has changed in thirty years--least of all the fear of being judged forever. It’s probably best to just back away.

very real depiction and evolution of love, romantic, parent to child, human to dog. Her perspective is ultimately realistic, and hopeful. I actually cried when she described the dream she had about Ira.
maybe it's because we have dog who is older and recently diagnosed with a terminal disease, and we're facing the same decisions. But it affected me. definitely worth a listen.

Story
After more than a decade, when sisters Nikki, Sami, and Tori Knotek hear the word mom, it claws like an eagle’s talons, triggering memories that have been their secret since childhood. Until now. For years, behind the closed doors of their farmhouse in Raymond, Washington, their sadistic mother, Shelly, subjected her girls to unimaginable abuse, degradation, torture, and psychic terrors. Through it all, Nikki, Sami, and Tori developed a defiant bond that made them far less vulnerable than Shelly imagined.

very interesting, horrifying.
accurate account of psychopathy, selecting, grooming, and trauma bonding of victims.
Different ways children in those situations try to survive. At least, ultimately, the 3 girls had each other. Worth a listen, but if you've experienced trauma yourself, or even if you haven"t, the horrible things that happen in this book can be triggering.

Story
An utterly unsentimental journey toward the end of life, Mala is an irreverent exploration of how we live, cope, and survive in the moment. Grounded in Lopez’s distinctive emotional language and sharp humor, this powerful one-woman show dances between doctors and urgent 911 calls, a mother’s growing frailty, and a daughter’s quest for grace - all set during an epic Boston winter. Rather than depict a “right way”, the play opens the door for our universal struggle to support those we love in dying, especially when all we’ve ever focused on is surviving.

I liked it. I'm not of Cuban descent, but I do have aging parents with aggressive, idiosyncratic personalities, so I could relate to the story pretty well. There were some parts where the mother speaks Spanish, which I do not understand, and it wasn't translated. I could sort of guess what she might have been saying, based on what was going on, but I still would have liked to know for sure. Other than that, nice story, well told.
