A bit drawn out

Compared to the other books in the series, this one had really drawn out murder story line and really drawn out drama/romance. Really drawn out.

Constant tradegy
Reviewed: 07-12-24
I am surprised i finished the book at all. I like a good female bonding story, but this is not that book. It is a story filled with continual sadness, lost love, betrayal in love, despair, despair in love, constant and continuous frustration and sadness, overwhelming betrayal from an entire country. It is not a story of how women bonded together. That is a very small part of the story. There is definite frustration around women being forgotten in Vietnam and their service dismissed but it is primarily about love, loss, and mental struggle. Yes, she has female friends to help her but that is not the main focus. Generally, yes, women have friends to help them through tough times. Only at the very end is there the established haven for the women to finally get the support. My mistake in my interpretation of the title.
It strikes me as very odd how the character never once defended her in-country service time by saying anything along the lines of "No, I wasn't involved in combat, but I saw thousands of soldiers wounded or killed in combat as an ARMY LIEUTENANT nurse". Whether or not it would have made a difference, I don't know, but there were plenty of times in this story that she could have said it.
If you like a super sad, heartbreak after hearbreak story, this might be the book for you.

Story
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Really cool layered stories

I didn't know what to expect and this book was a good choice. It's really multiple stories where each story leads to the next. The fairy tale part of the story is an unexpected perilous adventure. All of the stories are really engaging. I love a good long listen and I recommend this entertsing book. Very well narrated as well as really well written.

Laughed all the way through this episode. Not a lot of information shared on this episode, but tons of contagious laughter. What this episode lacks in continuity, it makes up fir in humor (and interruptions, just fyi). I will listen to this one again when I need a good laugh. I wish I could be friends with Kathryn Hahn!
