I absolutely loved this book. For once I felt like I was reading/hearing a real classic. I must say, too, that the narration was superb and was a huge part of making it so special.

I Needed This

Having grown up in the South, I needed this book. It clarified a lot of things for me and caused me to do a lot of soul searching. What a great job Ms. Austin did to show the thinking and reasoning of both sides of the war. What great characters.

Story
In 1910 Minnesota, Nilda Carlson's dreams are coming true. Though her first few months in America were difficult, her life now resembles the images that filled her daydreams in Norway. She and her younger brother Ivar live in their own house, just a short distance from her older brother and his family. Together they work the farm and fell trees for lumber. They plan to grow a dairy herd, weave rugs out of their own wool, and make skis to sell. Everything is going right. The only thing missing from Nilda's life is love.

So well written. I could “see” myself in their lives! And so uplifting. Thanks to Christina Moore as well. No better narrator!

Snelling is one of the best authors for word pictures. The descriptions are so vivid that you can see and feel (and smell) every minute of the book.

I love the way this is written. The word pictures are not too wordy; they’re just enough to make you feel like you’re right there. The look into the history and into the living conditions is a real eye opener. Great talent on both the author’s and narrator’s parts.
