The Weaving of A Storyline Through Time
Reviewed: 05-07-25
I loved this book! The main characters were well developed and the themes universal despite being set on Marono and Venice in different time periods. The details about glass working were fascinating as were the customs of their islands throughout the different times. The family dynamics were well defined and universal to all cultures and times. I highly recommend this book!

Perfectly Crafted Story

I have read and listened to numerous of Charlie Holmberg's novels. I have always enjoyed them as she is an excellent writer. Her characters are well developed and relatable, even if they're non- human. But this novel kept me spellbound and I couldn't stop listening. The narrators really did it justice. I devoured it in 2 days despite its length. During the last hour I kept hoping there was a sequel. But alas there is not. I highly recommend it.

In her first novel since 2002, Nebula and Hugo award-winning author Connie Willis returns with a stunning, enormously entertaining novel of time travel, war, and the deeds - great and small - of ordinary people who shape history. In the hands of this acclaimed storyteller, the past and future collideand the result is at once intriguing, elusive, and frightening.

Remarkable Series - Screaming Narrator Warning
Reviewed: 10-02-21
This is a remarkablely well written series of 3 novels. I loved every part of the storyline from beginning to end. The characters are fully developed and elicit strong emptional reactions. The overall plot is consistent throughout while each book is packed full of action and builds on the last. I was sad to finish it and will eagerly search for another book by this author as this was my first. She certainly didn't disappoint! I don't have a lot of time to read such a lengthy series so listened on audible. The narrator did a good job of voicing so many characters. However, just as others have noted, when the main character is experiencing strong emotions of fear etc. she SCREAMS instead of just mildly raising her voice or finding another way to express. I had to walk away from the audio many times out of sheer self protection because I couldn't lower the volume fast enough to avoid her blowing out my eardrums! I read sections of the books out of frustration but in the end I wanted to finish the series and the quickest way to do so was while driving with one hand on the volume.

Cute Series But Narration Not Great
Reviewed: 08-15-21
I enjoyed the premise of the stories and found the characters to be well developed and highly amusing. The various circumstances they found themselves in were often hilarious. The narrator's innate voice sounds like a young female. It made it impossible to sound like old ladies or give them much distinction let alone sound like the various male characters. She did her best and I thoroughly enjoyed the books. If you're someone who gets annoyed by imperfect narration then give this a skip.

Archaeologist Verity Grey has been drawn to the dark legends of the Scottish Borderlands in search of the truth buried in a rocky field by the sea. Her eccentric boss has spent his whole life searching for the resting place of the lost Ninth Roman Legion and is convinced he's finally found it - not because of any scientific evidence, but because a local boy has "seen" a Roman soldier walking in the fields, a ghostly sentinel who guards the bodies of his long-dead comrades.

I loved, loved, loved this book! My first Susanna Kearsley audio book was "Firebird" and I really enjoyed it so was excited to listen to this one. I'm an avid history buff and when I saw this was about a lost Roman legion, I was thrilled. It exceeded my expectations and I couldn't stop listening. The narration was great. There were multiple male voices but she did a good job of distinguishing between them. I can't recommend this strongly enough for those who like historical fiction with a bit of mystery, light paranormal and romance.

Couldn't Finish It
Reviewed: 05-13-21
I've tried numerous times to listen to this book and I simply can't. The story line is a bit difficult for me to follow and it moves incredibly slowly. The narrator doesn't distinguish between the various people well so it was hard for me to distinguish who was speaking. I bought it because it had great reviews and I really like this genre. Unfortunately, it was a waste of my credit since I waited too long to try to return it.

Story
After a political scandal, fledgling lobbyist Dempsey Jo Killebrew is left almost broke, unemployed, and homeless. She reluctantly accepts to refurbish Birdsong, the old family place in Guthrie, Georgia. But, oh, is Dempsey in for a surprise. "Bird Droppings" would more aptly describe the moldering Pepto Bismol - pink dump. There's also a murderously grumpy old lady who has claimed squatter's rights and isn't moving out. Ever.

Inane Story and Characters with Poor Narration
Reviewed: 01-10-21
I didn't expect this to be great literature but it didn't even manage a decent plot or characters. I tried to like it but fought to get even 30 minutes into it. How it managed to get such good ratings is beyond me. The story line and, sadly, the characters were cliche stereotypes and the main character was downright annoying. The narrator wasn't able to do much to distinguish between characters, especially the father for which she merely deepened her voice. She managed a poor but recognizable Cuban accent but she had no control over the way the story was written. I will never try another book by this author, bestselling writer or not.

Paint your toes. Pick up the wrong coffee and bagel order. Drive from Brooklyn to Jersey in traffic so slow you want to tear your hair out. It’s amazing all the useless things I can accomplish while on hold for three hours with customer service. Three hours when I should be getting the Date-in-a-Box website ready to launch at the big business expo in a few days. Except my shiny new website is glitching, and my inner rage-monster is ready to scorch some earth...when he finally picks up. Not the robot voice I expected but a real live human named Kal.

Not the Cliche Romance I Expected
Reviewed: 12-31-20
I downloaded this because it was fairly short and I needed a break from my normal 15 hour serious fiction. It had me 10 minutes after hello! The storyline popped along at a good pace and there were plenty of funny moments to keep me wanting to listen far longer than I should. The characters had more depth than you'd expect in a shorter story and romance was balanced with the life issues they each faced. The narrators were fabulous and I fell in love with Cal, making me wish he was real! Highly recommended this book.
