Story
High in his attic bedroom, 12-year-old David mourns the loss of his mother. He is angry and he is alone, with only the books on his shelf for company. But those books have begun to whisper to him in the darkness, and as he takes refuge in the myths and fairytales so beloved of his dead mother, he finds that the real world and the fantasy world have begun to meld. The Crooked Man has come, with his mocking smile and his enigmatic words: "Welcome, your majesty. All hail the new king."

An amazing story and a fine narration.

There is very little about this book or this performance and narrator that I disliked. The story itself is an adult fairytale, and I’ve read some other reviews that I’ve given it less than stellar reception largely because they thought that it was young adult fiction or young adult fairytale. It is squarely for adults, so let’s start there. If viewed in that way I struggle to see how this isn’t one of the finer stories ever told.

Story
Little Marek, the abused and delusional son of the village shepherd, believes his mother died giving birth to him. One of Marek’s few consolations is his enduring bond with the blind village midwife, Ina, who suckled him when he was a baby. For some people, Ina’s ability to receive transmissions of sacred knowledge from the natural world is a godsend. For others, Ina’s home in the woods is a godless place.

Well written. Not for everyone, but if it’s for you, you’ll give it 4 stars.

A genuinely good book. Two steps away from great. A few parts seems simply inserted for shock value. That said, there are some character studies in it that truest excel. Well done.
