Novel or product placement?

I wanted to like this book—has art theft, Italy, mystery, all things I love in a novel. However, the plot was predictable, characters rather bland, and the entire story seemed full of product placement—brands and descriptions of them—which was jarring and distracting. Sadly, it doesn’t compare favorably with other authors and series in this genre.

Story
1876. In the glittering world of Manhattan's upper crust, women are valued by their pedigree, dowry, and, most importantly, connections. They have few rights and even less independence - what they do have is society. The more celebrated the hostess, the more powerful the woman. And none is more powerful than Caroline Astor - the Mrs. Astor.

Ok story, terrible reading

This story was ok—I have read more compelling works on these women, but it was interesting enough. The narration, however, was stilted and occasionally almost unlistenable.

Story
Mount Kilimanjaro is sometimes called "Everyman's Everest" because it is possible for a novice climber to reach the summit. And every year, more than 30,000 adventure tourists try. But for each person who goes to the mountain, there are thousands more who chat about it at parties, making plans to go...someday. That's how Daniel Dorr got started: flirting with a beautiful brunette and spouting impressive plans. Six months later, he was lying on the gravel trail at 18,000 feet, panting and hacking in the darkness.

Interesting idea, but author's ego is always in the way
Reviewed: 06-11-17
Perhaps I have more of the attitude of the author's girlfriend in the book--I'm Into adventure travel for the enjoyment and experience of the people and natural beauty of places. The author seems to be constantly in competition--judging himself against others, evaluating everyone else's (and his own) shortcomings, constantly taking the measure of things. It is irritating. Does he ever stop to take a look at his surroundings and appreciate where he is? Not often, it seems. The book is a great depiction of just how challenging the actual climb can be, but I appreciate the attitudes of nearly everyone else he climbed with far more than the author's own.
