Enjoyed it until the child assault

Really liked the first book and was all set for book 2 but the storyline that included molesting children was so horrific I had to quit listening. (Note that it's not particularly graphic, just that it occurs at all. I don't want to read about that).

Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Fantastic and sciencey

I loved this story. Loved the way it was told in flashbacks and real time. Loved the relationship between the main characters and felt like the ending was perfect. Narration was stellar and I can't imagine getting the same effect reading it in text. Highly recommend.

Story
After the old gods warred and drove themselves to extinction, the cataclysm of their fall shattered the land of Vigrio. Now, power-hungry jarls carve out petty kingdoms, and monsters stalk the shadow-haunted woods and mountains. A world where the bones of the dead gods still hold great power, promising fame, and fortune for those brave - or desperate - enough to seek them out. As whispers of war echo over the plains and across the fjords, fate follows the footsteps of three people. All three will shape the fate of the world, as it once more teeters on the edge of chaos.

Constant violence

I could not believe how often the characters in this book were being beaten till almost the point of death. They'd be miraculously rescued by someone happening to come by at the very last minute, then the next scene they'd be attacked by someone else. I finally gave up at the scene with the giant spiders.
Narrator has a nice voice but did not really differentiate between characters, and had a weird habit of adding random "s"s to words that I'm pretty sure any competent author would not have written. (People "moved forwards" when I'm sure it was written "moved forward", etc. Happened multiple times.
I'm very rarely a DNF and the good reviews kept me going longer than I otherwise would have. But the thought of a couple more books about people constantly being beaten bloody then getting up and walking off to the next person who would beat them bloody again was more than I could stomach.
