Insightful reviews - Amusing delivery
Reviewed: 05-27-22
I have been delighted by Jacke Wilson's thoughtful podcast of famous literature. His reviews are insightful and well composed. Most delightful is his amusing delivery style. Wilson gives the chosen topic a brief review (one hour episodes usually) including the biography of the author and the historic context of the work. He selects a theme in the literature to expound on shares his personal response to the work. I think History of Literature is a very positive and inspiring podcast.

Story
From cherished memories of weekends she spent as a child with her indulgent Nana to the reality of the year she spent "ladysitting" her now frail grandmother, Lorene Cary journeys through stories of their time together and five generations of their African American family. Brilliantly weaving a narrative of her relationship with Nana - a fierce, stubborn, and independent woman, who managed a business until she was 100 - Cary looks at Nana's impulse to control people and fate, from the death of her mother and oppression in the Jim Crow South to living on her own in her New Jersey home.

The memoir will resonate to anyone who has cared for an elder. The story is told with humor and love. The author does an excellent job of conveying her Nanna's voice.

Never boring and captures the best of the American experience.

Wow, the Howard brothers become real folks in this memoir of growing up as child actors and celebrities in Hollywood. They tell their family story which is a true American story about reaching out for a dream and working diligently to make it happen. Ron’s recollections of his time on The Andy Griffith Show are delightful because he tells it from his perspective as a kid. I loved the show when I was a child and the characters felt so real to me then and now.
The adolescent years were not easy sailing for these brothers and it was the family values that got them through in the end. So many children in show business don’t land grounded like Ron and Clint did. I live in Burbank and work in television, so it rang especially true to me personally.

Story
Empire of the Summer Moon spans two astonishing stories. The first traces the rise and fall of the Comanches, the most powerful Indian tribe in American history. The second entails one of the most remarkable narratives ever to come out of the Old West: the epic saga of the pioneer woman Cynthia Ann Parker and her mixed-blood son, Quanah, who became the last and greatest chief of the Comanches.

Top notch history book. Important study of the American Comanche.

I liked the way the book focused on the terrain that the Comanches were so completely adapted to. It is hard to grasp the vastness of the area they dominated. The life of Quanah Parker is a fascinating tale of survival.

Story
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.
