repetitive, dull, endless context-less stats and research seemed to only come from wikipedia, i say this as someone who immediately went to Wikipedia. There's a whole series of these.

Great Insight for Thrawn enthusiasts
Reviewed: 07-26-21
It was a great book, another great read from Timothy Zahn. Who originated the character in his now uncanonical late 80's trilogy. Having read those I was very enthused to read this book as well. Love the performance by Marc Thompson, who I learned essentially is the modern voice of all things Star Wars Audio. What I felt was lacking was originality in the overall arc, I haven't had a chance to read the other two in this Thrawn trilogy, but found parts to be predictable. I was very impressed with Thrawn of the original Trilogy, was very surprised by his tactics and characterization. Maybe because this is a prequel to that original version and this outlines his ascension to Admiral and maybe as a more clever strategist, I wasn't that overwhelmed by his tactical genius. Maybe I am splitting hairs a bit, but I did enjoy the book overall regardless.

Story
In the early 18th century, the Pirate Republic was home to some of the great pirate captains, including Blackbeard, "Black Sam" Bellamy, and Charles Vane. Along with their fellow pirates - former sailors, indentured servants, and runaway slaves - this "Flying Gang" established a crude but distinctive democracy in the Bahamas, carving out their own zone of freedom in which servants were free, Blacks could be equal citizens, and leaders were chosen or deposed by a vote.

Excellent for Pirate Enthusiasts

The book was heavy on the statistics, but the narration carried it, told in a mostly linear fashion. I at times was frantically googling boat types as the term and knowledge of Sloops,Galleons, Brigadeens etc, aren't a part of my everyday understanding, but loved the book. Dare i say i sympathized with the pirates, considering their motivation to turn to piracy.

An Exercise
Reviewed: 01-27-21
Conceptually, fairly good. Premise had some interesting tidbits. I feel like the author has a limited perspective of Millenials or Gen Z, because to say the characters are contrived is an understatement. I am not an author so It's unfair to judge too harshly, it is just a book after all, a bit of escapism. That being said, there are countless stories to draw inspiration from, in this case clearly Lord of the Flies-World War Z- and in some shape, Disney World and Florida Man. The story just leaps too far into implausible logic and motivation. For a fairly normal 20 something to turn to homicide within 3 days of being stuck in a theme park was just too much. Had it been more campy, FUNGORE splatter fest, sure like any good B horror movie, the set up is just for the gore like SAW or something, but this book took it self very seriously, and an elaborate tapestry into the slow evolution into homicidal tendencies it wasn't. At times it was just a slog to get through it. I will say as others, cheers to the narration.

Story
All good things must come to an end, Constant Listener, and not even Stephen King can write a story that goes on forever. The tale of Roland Deschain's relentless quest for the Dark Tower has, the author fears, sorely tried the patience of those who have followed it from its earliest chapters. But attend to it a while longer, if it pleases you, for this volume is the last, and often the last things are best.

satisfying conclusion

It seems there could be no other end,but the end given and written. we all draw our own conclusions, and have our own wishes as to Roland's journey, prior to experiencing it,but we have no more control over it then Roland. Unless you have a door that takes you to the time before Stephen King wrote it. I found this expansive book not to be everything i wanted and filled with bitter moments as well as beautiful and thrilling ones. The joy of this oddly poetic journey left me happy to have gone along, experienced it and turn the page(so to speak, shout out to Audible) and finally reached the end.
