Started off like a normal book. A man enjoying success and prospering while engaging in some shady practices. Things fall apart, so he provides evidence and goes into witness protection, has to adjust to new lifestyle. That is what I thought the book would be about, probably with some complicating incidents involving the people he had provided evidence to convict.

At that point I think the author went on an LSD trip, or perhaps was pressed by his publishers to finish the book while he was experiencing crushing writers block. So appears a mind-reading, talking mule, neighbors from another planet (who have miracle mechanical devices to solve whatever troubles arise) What the heck?

Distracting 'saids'

Mark said Melanie said Sunny said he said she said. When you're listening seems like every sentence ends in 'said". Very distracting from the story. Makes you long for the dialogue to stop. If a performer could do the voices more distinguishably, (ok I made up that word) and then drop some saids it would flow a lot better
