In a rare window into some of her life’s pivotal moments, Melinda French Gates draws from previously untold stories to offer a new perspective on encountering transitions. Melinda will reflect on some of the most significant transitions in her own life, including becoming a parent, the death of a dear friend, and her departure from the Gates Foundation. The stories she tells illuminate universal lessons about loosening the bonds of perfectionism, helping friends navigate times of crisis, embracing uncertainty, and more.

Overly Dramatic and Shallow
Reviewed: 05-10-25
Obviously a woman of white privilege. I found this book to be extremely trite and shallow. I sped up the audiobook so I could get through it as quickly as possible. When I got to the end where she was wanting to build up more philanthropies for women my opinion improved.

Story
Though Anderson Cooper has always considered himself close to his mother, his intensely busy career as a journalist for CNN and CBS affords him little time to spend with her. After she suffers a brief but serious illness at the age of ninety-one, they resolve to change their relationship by beginning a yearlong conversation unlike any they have ever had before. The result is a correspondence of surprising honesty and depth in which they discuss their lives, the things that matter to them, and what they still want to learn about each other.

Loved hearing Gloria Vanderbilt’s account of her life and all the wild stories of her youth. Great mother-son dialogues as only Anderson Cooper could produce.

Fabulous account of the Norman invasion and how it transformed Britain. The professor explains it using the perfect balance of detail and doesn’t overwhelm the listener with too many details.

Empire of the Summer Moon spans two astonishing stories. The first traces the rise and fall of the Comanches, the most powerful Indian tribe in American history. The second entails one of the most remarkable narratives ever to come out of the Old West: the epic saga of the pioneer woman Cynthia Ann Parker and her mixed-blood son, Quanah, who became the last and greatest chief of the Comanches.

Story
The Antidote is a series of journeys among people who share a single, surprising way of thinking about life. What they have in common is a hunch about human psychology: that it’s our constant effort to eliminate the negative that causes us to feel so anxious, insecure, and unhappy. And that there is an alternative "negative path" to happiness and success that involves embracing the things we spend our lives trying to avoid.

Extremely Meaningful Wisdom!
Reviewed: 12-20-24
The author goes into lengthy detailed stories that may make you wonder where he’s leading you and then he clinches it and the point is eloquently delivered. He drives home some important messages about the benefits of failure and how strictly adhering to a goal can be fool hardy. He dismisses new age positive thinking as a path to happiness and convinces the reader to try stoicism instead. I’m going to listen to this at least once more!

Story
My husband and I are fighting for our lives in hospital after a terrible car accident. But despite my pain, all I can think about is what our families will find behind our front door. The scarf that has been all over the news, belonging to a dead young woman with honey-coloured hair. I have to speak to the police before my husband can. I’m drifting in and out of consciousness, but when I hear my wife talking to the police, accusing me of the murder of an innocent woman, a cold fear grips me. I know I’ve got a temper.

I found this delightful audiobook when I was suffering from the winter blues and some work challenges. This book lifted me up out of the blues and gave me a new regard for humor, and not taking life so seriously! Big thanks to Eric Idle and the rest of the Monty Python troop, who have kept us in stitches, all these years! The humor is timeless.
