Story
Cyril Avery is not a real Avery - or at least that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead.

Story
Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.

Gripping and horrifying

This book describes in graphic detail, the consequences of an electromagnetic pulse attack against the USA. It is both troublesome, horrifying and inspiring to see how people can cope with such a catastrophe. Since it is based on the realistic consequences of an EMP attack, this book should have a wide audience.

Rambling Story
Reviewed: 12-29-19
This is an interesting story but I found the prose to be circuitous rambling with many gratuitous distracting details. The reader did not vary his voice adequately to fit the different characters. It was a slow moving book. Disappointing! Dick Hill should read future Reacher Books
