Story
Stranger in a Strange Land is the epic saga of an earthling, Valentine Michael Smith, born and educated on Mars, who arrives on our planet with “psi” powers—telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, telekinesis, teleportation, pyrolysis, and the ability to take control of the minds of others—and complete innocence regarding the mores of man. After his tutelage under a surrogate father figure, Valentine begins his transformation into a kind of messiah.

A crowning achievement in science fiction. Easily my favorite Robert Heinlein novel. Powerful. Emotionally engaging in ways much of his other work is not. The narrator breathes life into each character and manages to convey with voice unique aspects of each character. Highly recommended.

One of the foremost achievements in Western literature, Homer's Iliad tells the story of the darkest episode in the Trojan War. At its center is Achilles, the greatest warrior-champion of the Greeks, and his refusal to fight after being humiliated by his leader, Agamemnon.

Dactylic hexameter does not work in English. If you want that structure in a modern language look for a Hungarian translation, or learn Ancient Greek. This translation nevertheless manages to bring Homer’s Sun hot poem to beauty in English. Michael Page has a wonderful voice and delivers this poem in rare form. It is a shame he has not voiced the pope translation of the odyssey.

Story
Polybius wrote his Histories "to find out by what means and by what political system the entire world was brought under the domination of Rome." Within the short space of about 50 years Rome went from being a provincial leader of an Italian confederacy to become the Mistress of the Mediterranean. Polybius was one of the first historians to attempt to present history as a sequence of causes and effects, based upon a careful examination of tradition and a keen scrutiny of the facts.

Warning! History ruins fiction

This account of the Punic wars (part) is simply incredible. It’s the kind of thing that if you think about it, is so big in scope so sweeping in its lasting impact on the modern world, that it can make fiction seem boring in comparison.
The narrator does an excellent job bringing polybius ancient narrative to life with his voice.

Story
You take pride in your all-around physical development—but have precious little time for it. You are serving your country, raising a family, training for a sport… You have been around too long to be fooled by pop fitness “high intensity” fads. The Quick and the Dead is designed for an advanced minimalist like you. A culmination of five years of research and experimentation, it distills cutting-edge science to a straightforward protocol of only two basic exercises you mastered years ago: kettlebell swings and power pushups.

A minimalist program from the father of minimalist programs
Reviewed: 11-18-19
Narrator speaks very clearly. The writing is concise, clear and focused on one topic. The opening of the book spends a significant amount of time covering success stories- this part of the book feels like fluff to me. As an audiobook it is well read: the narrator speaks with clarity and confidence. However the technical information described would be better analyzed by reading a physical copy rather than listening to the narration.
This audiobook is instructional, not a narrative of events, so 1 star for story.
One thing I am not fully clear on - is this a training program or a training protocol? Given the minimal time and exercises, I cane away from the book with the impression that this can be implemented as a protocol with other training the student may doing. This point needs clarification.

As always, Marc Vietor is phenomenal as a narrator. The story is fun, the adventure fast paced and the characters a joy to be around. It’s a shorter romp, but one that’s always worth the time to enjoy. Stay a while. And listen.

Go slowly through the drawers
Reviewed: 12-22-18
I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve read this over the years. It’s a fine read, chock full of action, suspense, character growth, and a growing perspective of the worlds of the dark tower. Much and more happens on this leg of the journey and the audiobook will fly by faster than you might expect. Frank Muller as always gives a fantastic performance bringing life to each character in the way only he can. The only reason for four stars on story is the cliffhanger. Feels cheap, even now. But the next volume picks up right there and doesn’t relent. A real high point in the series.

Story
Eerie, dreamlike, set in a world that is weirdly related to our own, The Gunslinger introduces Roland Deschain of Gilead, of In-World that was, as he pursues his enigmatic antagonist to the mountains that separate the desert from the Western Sea in the first volume of The Dark Tower series. Roland, the last gunslinger, is a solitary figure, perhaps accursed, who with a strange single-mindedness traverses an exhausted, almost timeless landscape of good and evil.

Engaging from the first line to the last. Each chapter is a vignette in the adventures of the gunslinger as he pursues the dark tower. Unexpectedly the actions of the title character lead this reader to question deeply the choices a hero may be faced with, may be required to make. Really good stuff. Mr Guidall does an excellent narration, speaking life into each character. The retcon edits change subtle things but not the overall story or character of the tale. If you haven’t read this, do yourself a favor cully. Read the gunslinger.
