Infuriatingly long for no reason
Reviewed: 03-24-25
This was too long and nonsensical. It's giving needing extreme therapy. Perhaps there are women this way irl. However, the disrespect of her spouse; the disrespect of the young girl, the craziness was too longwinded. Not one of my favorites. Very laborious read

I like how this was culminated although you know it's good when you're liming for more and more. You want to know more about the adventures of the location and inhabitants. Did the characters all marry? What about their spawn? A delightful intrigue.

Story
Love? That’s not in my script. At least, that’s what I thought before Rah. Rah and his seven feet of broad-shouldered, unreadable, way-too-noble-for-his-own-good self. If someone had told me I’d be stuck on a green desert planet, tangled up in some slow-burn, unresolved-tension situation with him, I would’ve laughed and said that sounds like a bad sci-fi romance.

Gabrielle LeRoux was just like any other girl, focused on her academics and other normal teenage angst. That is, until her 18th birthday, where she inherits her powers and finds out she's a witch! She discovers that she is part of a long line of witches that descended from West Africa. They have the power to control the elements at will, breathe life into anything they wish, as well as take it away. The source of their magic comes from the melanin only their kind possess in their skin, absorbed from the sun and radiating through their bodies.

Yetu holds the memories for her people - water-dwelling descendants of pregnant African slave women thrown overboard by slave owners - who live idyllic lives in the deep. Their past, too traumatic to be remembered regularly, is forgotten by everyone, save one - the historian. This demanding role has been bestowed on Yetu. Yetu remembers for everyone, and the memories, painful and wonderful, traumatic and terrible and miraculous, are destroying her. And so, she flees to the surface, escaping the memories, the expectations, and the responsibilities.
