A Must Listen For All

Following my listening to Homo Sapiens, I listened to Homo Deus. The audio book paints a provocative and at times dark vision of a future where humans have been replaced by algorithms that control everything. As bleak as the work is at times, it is wonderfully written. The performance is excellent. I believe anyone concerned about humanity's future should listen.

Story
Alexander was born into the royal family of Macedonia, the kingdom that would soon rule over Greece. Tutored as a boy by Aristotle, Alexander had an inquisitive mind that would serve him well when he faced formidable obstacles during his military campaigns. Shortly after taking command of the army, he launched an invasion of the Persian Empire, and continued his conquests as far south as the deserts of Egypt and as far east as the mountains of present-day Pakistan and the plains of India.

Story
In Alexander the Great, Anthony Everitt judges Alexander’s life against the criteria of his own age and considers all his contradictions. We meet the Macedonian prince who was naturally inquisitive and fascinated by science and exploration, as well as the man who enjoyed the arts and used Homer’s great epic, the Iliad, as a bible. As his empire grew, Alexander exhibited respect for the traditions of his new subjects and careful judgment in administering rule over his vast territory. But his career also had a dark side.

As a student and enthusiast of ancient history, particularly the Hellenistic world, I have high standards in the materials I read or listen to. This book met and exceeded my expectations. Well written and narrated in an easy to follow, engaging style, I highly recommend this title.

Authors Should Not Read Their Own Works

I am a great fan of Dr. Kline. I have this book in print format. I have watched his YouTube lecture, and I know he is a dynamic, engaging speaker. As a professor myself, however, I can attest to the wide gulf that separates speaking ability and reading aloud ability. I listened to about 10 minutes of this audiobook, and I had to quit due to Dr. Kline's painfully slow, monotone performance. This is unfortunate because the book is excellent. If ever there was a need for a guest reader, this is it.

Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

This is one of the best audiobooks I have listened to. The author provides a fascinating and, at times, terrifying look at us humans. He has held a mirror up to our existence, and it is wanting in many respects. I encourage anyone with an interest in how we have evolved and where we are headed to listen to this audiobook.

This was one of the most interesting and engaging Great Courses I have listened to so far. The teacher takes you on a journey through time by asking listeners to imagine they are ordinary people living during different periods, from Neanderthal to the 1400s. It is a profoundly effective way to present material that can sometimes seem unapproachable. I would listen to this teacher again and again and strongly recommend this course to all listeners interested in the lives of regular folk throughout the ages, "the other side of history."

Story
Civilization was born 8,000 years ago, between the floodplains of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, when migrants from the surrounding mountains and deserts began to create increasingly sophisticated urban societies. In the cities that they built, half of human history took place. In Babylon, Paul Kriwaczek tells the story of Mesopotamia from the earliest settlements seven thousand years ago to the eclipse of Babylon in the sixth century BCE. Bringing the people of this land to life in vibrant detail, the author chronicles the rise and fall of power during this period.

Excellent Audiobook

I just finished the audiobook Babylon. The title of the book suggests a singular focus, but it delivers much more. The author, Paul Kriwaczek, has an excellent ability to make what can seem like an inaccessible subject quite approachable through the use of dramatic writing and expert linking of the topic as relevant to our own times. I enjoyed this audiobook so much I had to add the actual book to my increasingly extensive collection of works on ancient history. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in the history of the ancient Near East.
