Story
Yuri Herrera does not simply write about the border between Mexico and the United States and those who cross it. He explores the crossings and translations people make in their minds and language as they move from one country to another, especially when there's no going back. Traversing this lonely territory is Makina, a young woman who knows only too well how to survive in a violent, macho world. Leaving behind her life in Mexico to search for her brother, she is smuggled into the USA carrying a pair of secret messages - one from her mother and one from the Mexican underworld.

great performance

I really enjoyed the performance. Just excellent! I was not at all bothered by the unorthodox use of language. In fact its clear to me it's essential for what the author is trying to express in Spanish. As an Arabic speaker i was fascinated by the use of Verse, the gloss of the Spanish word originally from Arabic hijra, a word itself full of meaning and difficult to translate.

Story
In May 2001, a group of men attempted to cross the Mexican border into the desert of southern Arizona, through the deadliest region of the continent, the "Devil's Highway." Three years later, Luis Alberto Urrea wrote about what happened to them. The result was a national bestseller, a Pulitzer Prize finalist, a "book of the year" in multiple newspapers, and a work proclaimed as a modern American classic.

Wow! Great Reading and Diverse Perspectives

Author's reading of this book is superb. Wouldn't be the same book without. Interpretation is added by the reading. What i got out of this reading was insight into different perspectives on the issues of Mexican Immigration: in particular the immigrants themselves, those involved in the business of immigration and the Mexican Consultant. Even the Border Patrol perspective is highlighted. One of my favorite titles in Audible!

Story
Carrying only basic camping equipment and a collection of the world's great spiritual writings, Belden C. Lane embarks on solitary spiritual treks through the Ozarks and across the American Southwest. For companions, he has only such teachers as Rumi, John of the Cross, Hildegard of Bingen, Dag Hammarskjöld, and Thomas Merton, and as he walks, he engages their writings with the natural wonders he encounters, demonstrating how being alone in the wild opens a rare view onto one's interior landscape, and how the saints' writings reveal the divine in nature.

This is a book I'll listen to again. I thought the balance between material on saints and backpacking was well balanced.
