Story
Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

The narration style was engaging and the story entertaining. I wasn't much interested in the 'Coda' and felt the story could've done without it, although I suppose it did tie things up nicely.

Story
Quentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A senior in high school, he's still secretly preoccupied with a series of fantasy novels he read as a child, set in a magical land called Fillory. Imagine his surprise when he finds himself unexpectedly admitted to a very secret, very exclusive college of magic in upstate New York, where he receives a thorough and rigorous education in the craft of modern sorcery.

doesn't really live up to the hype

Quite a disappointing main character and full of superfluous language. There was nothing dramatically unique about the plot and it dragged a bit in spots. Despite all that, it was interesting enough to keep me reading.

Cutting a deal with a trickster god rarely goes well for any human brave or foolish enough to try it, but Atticus doesn’t feel like he has a choice. With members of the Norse pantheon out for his blood, he can’t train his apprentice in peace, so he asks Coyote to help him fake his own death. The cost, however, might wind up being every bit as high as if he’d made no deal at all.

I did find a couple of Granuaile scenes were written oddly, it's like the author can't decide if she's a meek damsel or not. Her reaction to being scolded for not telling about meeting goddesses in the 'Test of Mettle' short story, for example, seemed awkward when compared with the rest of her personality.
I do quite enjoy Oberon -- he's quite possibly my favorite character in this series. I particularly like how Luke Daniels narrates his voice.

Story
Under the direction of famed explorer Porter Stone, an archaeological team is secretly attempting to locate the tomb of an ancient pharaoh who was unlike any other in history. Stone believes he has found the burial chamber of King Narmer, the near mythical god-king who united upper and lower Egypt in 3200 B.C., and the archaeologist has reason to believe that the greatest prize of all - Narmer's crown - might be buried with him. No crown of an Egyptian king has ever been discovered, and Narmer's is the elusive crown of the two Egypts.

The story itself was okay, parts were even entertaining.
Some of the characters were interesting, if predictable, but they were handled so poorly that overall this book became a great disappointment.

It's what you'd expect from a Dan Brown book

This book is exactly what you expect it to be, the same formula we've seen before. A fast-paced race to find modern secrets in ancient things, a pretty girl who isn't what she seems to be and piles of miscommunication and misdirection to lead the way.
Some of the characterizations are rather trite, but I only rolled my eyes a couple of times.
What I want to know is why is this still entertaining? Because it is, I just don't get why.

Space! Quirky aliens!
Reviewed: 08-12-13
OK, so there are a couple standard plot devices here that I don't care for - a) miscommunication between main characters as source of conflict and b) woman feels an overwhelming sense of 'Guilt' for things that are out of her control. To be fair, she's not the only character that gets a dose of this last one, but since it's her POV it seems more pronounced.
Despite those small gripes, this is a rather fun book and I really do appreciate the main character being a female protagonist that is in her thirties and the sense of team the book has set up with the crew.
The adventure is pretty interesting and it didn't feel cut off at the end (sometimes books that are planned series have way too many things open at the end, leaving an unfinished feel -- this didn't do that)

While Abraham Lincoln is widely lauded for saving a Union and freeing millions of slaves, his valiant fight against the forces of the undead has remained in the shadows for hundreds of years. That is, until Seth Grahame-Smith stumbled upon The Secret Journal of Abraham Lincoln, and became the first living person to lay eyes on it in more than 140 years.

Definitely not what I was expecting, but then I've apparently been living under a rock. I enjoyed the first portion of the book a bit more than the later portion, but overall it was still very engaging.
The reader's style worked so well with the story. His inflection and tone really drew me into the tale.
