I listened with such intensity, for hours every day, rewinding to hear parts again. Some of the most beautifu prose I have ever heard. I feel like I was there, in that time, with the characters of the book. Absolutely captivating!

Well read story about people who can't communicate
Reviewed: 05-27-24
I really wanted to like this but was disappointed. A well read dimestore romance, lots of sex and sexual tension with virtually no plot. The characters didn't know how to communicate with each other but the misunderstandings didn't create a better story, it showed the characters as shallow and weak. I kept waiting for something to turn out well but the end was trite and meaningless.

Story
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Story
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.
