Enjoyable PA fiction with a fun plot.

Lots of plot holes, but if you suspend your disbelief for just a bit, you'll appreciate the story told here. The narration is top-notch and the story is entertaining, with some fun characters and some not so great ones. There's a good novel here about a virus that rusts anything metallic and how society, and your hero, tries to deal with the aftermath.

Post Apocalyptic Horror
Reviewed: 06-06-24
I've listened and read to a lot of post apocalyptic fiction, but this one hit a little different. The book was narrated decently, and the story had its ups and downs, but sometimes it went a bit too far with details. Overall, I really did enjoy following the same characters throughout their journey from the Northeast during the collapse of the United States. However, some side stories were tedious and acted as filler to an already lengthy trilogy of books.
If you like the post apocalyptic genre and want something other than just zombies chewing on brains, I'd give this series a shot. Just be ready for some gruesome parts.

Robinson Really Doesn't Miss!
Reviewed: 10-31-23
I've read many of Jeremy's books and liked most of them. This one is no exception. The narration is great and the book reads much like a Michael Crichton novel, but with less science involved. If you like science, humor, and some action, then this book will be right up your alley. If you're already familiar with Robinson's work, then it's a no-brainer.

Short and Fun Adventure!
Reviewed: 10-09-23
I go through this book in a weekend, but that doesn't make it any less fun to listen to. The narrator did a great job with most of the voices and accents, and while the story was a little cliche and something right out of a movie, it was still an exciting ride.
Don't expect too much from this short listen and you might just find yourself wondering what comes next!

Different Take On Post-Apocalyptic Fiction...
Reviewed: 08-14-21
I went into this book really wanting to enjoy it, but I ended up just kind of suffering through. Jack's writing hasn't always been my favorite, but it's always decently competent and it was here. The story itself is told decently and the characters were okay, but other than that this story fell flat in a lot of ways.
The pacing of the book wasn't very consistent, as sometimes you were drawn to be engaged, but other times the story was a struggle to get through. Honestly, I believe that if this was read by someone like R.C. Bray it would have been much better. The narrator just didn't perform the different character voices very well and it was painful to listen to at times.
The actual concept of the virus in the book is very cool and a bit novel, so I have no complaints there, but other than that, the story is very average.

What Murderous Fun!
Reviewed: 06-14-20
First off I want everyone to know that I was invited by the author to check out this book for free, but I'm not a politician, so this opinion is my own.
I've listened to 3 books by T.J. Payne and enjoyed all of them, this one was no different. The premise of the book has been done in some way, shape or form before, but it didn't make this a less interesting listen at all. I enjoyed the limited character development in the short run time of the book and felt like I got to know a few of the main protagonists pretty well by the end of it.
There's a whole lot of killing and gore in the book, so be aware of that before going in to this. Some of the scenes made me cringe and were truly horrifying, seriously. I'm not sure I'd actually want to meet T.J Payne and he's definitely not going to be my first choice as a baby sitter.
The plot was fairly predictable with a little twist at the end that might result in a sequel/series/spin off maybe? If there are more books T.J., be sure to hit me up as I absolutely love having nightmares. If you like horror, are looking for a quick read/listen that will keep you entertained then I'd say this book is a fantastic choice. Don't come here looking for Stephen King level descriptions and endless pages of gory details as you'll just end up disappointed.

Maybe This Review Will Protect You From This Book?
Reviewed: 01-02-20
I'm not sure where to start with this book. Let's tackle the writing first. The premise of the book is good. Barriers are created to protect people from solar flares that decimate the earth pretty regularly, but only chosen people get to sit inside these barriers, while others live in places that aren't protected and have to tough it out.
Okay, good premise for a dystopian novel, right? Well, that's about as good as the book gets. After that premise gets laid down you get thrown into a mash up of various different stories following various different people. My finger hurts from having to rewind so many times to try to understand what was happening. Okay, so someone's child is set to be euthanized and there's a time traveler, also a robot and a female protagonist in there too. All in all, the whole book is based around trying to save a child and figuring out a way to hack some of these barriers and stop a plot to destroy a huge chunk of earth's population, but then there's a twist and it just gets even more convoluted and disorienting.
So the story is a little confusing and maybe someone smarter than me will easily be able to put all the characters into a cohesive timeline, right? The narration can't be too awful then, right? Something's gotta give with this. Nope! The narrator finishes sentences just like he starts them. It's absolutely distracting and his narration just isn't good. He's a rather new narrator and while I didn't expect R.C. Bray level narration, this narrator actually gave me anxiety. The book just doesn't feel right being read by him and maybe it would have been a better experience all around if a different narrator was chosen.
Overall, this isn't the worst book I've listened to, but the story and narration just isn't good enough to warrant continuing onto the next book in the series.

You Won't Want to Retire This Book Early!

This book was a fast paced, thrilling sci-fi ride. I really enjoyed the pacing of the book, as it helped me stay engaged with the story even through the more mundane parts of the story. R.C. Bray does a fantastic job narrating as he always does, so the performance gets 5 stars from me.
The story starts off like a gritty assassin/detective novel, but there are little (and big) twists and turns that keep you guessing as to what might happen next. The ending was predictable, but I still enjoyed the twist thrown in there for the reader near the ending.
Looking forward to more from Chris Pourteau in the future!
