Story
On the world called Hyperion, beyond the law of the Hegemony of Man, there waits the creature called the Shrike. There are those who worship it. There are those who fear it. And there are those who have vowed to destroy it. In the Valley of the Time Tombs, where huge, brooding structures move backward through time, the Shrike waits for them all.

Maybe i didnt know what i was getting into with this book. the stories of each character are fantastic and the world building and sense of mystery is great so for that at least i can reccomend it fully. not exactly a lot of pay off which can be overlooked for some books, in my opinion not this one. i understand there is a series but i have no desire to read the rest.

Story
A seven-year-old girl has been bludgeoned to death and buried in a pile of leaves. Although the police have no leads, they are pressured to close the case as soon as possible. So they call in a master interrogator to question 12-year-old Jason, the victim's friend and the last person to see her alive. Although Jason is innocent, he is shy, insecure, and wants to give answers that will satisfy everyone.

The first time i read Robert Cormier was over a decade ago when i read i am the cheese for English class. Happy to say nearing my 30s that his writing is still as haunting and unnerving as ever. I don't think he can be matched for his tone of the realistically unsettling. Listened to this in an afternoon and highly reccomend it - among tenderness and beyond the chocolate war would rank it as a favourite of his. Narrator was pretty good too no complaints definitely worth the purchase for all.
