joseph needham was a brilliant, Leonardo type scientist, interested in everything.
he proved that instead of being a backward country, China was the inventor of so
many things, from the printing press, bridges, aqueducts. A must read if you’re planning a trip to China or just want to know more about a fascinating country and culture.

how could anyone dislike this book? Sad, funny, heroic. So true about blacks in South Africa at that time. And, I love his Mother!

i read many, many books and tried HARD on 3 separate occasions to finish this one The plot(was there really a plot?) was meandering.
I disliked the characters, not because of their sexuality, but they were boring, unhappy, depressed and depressing.. Admittedly l, i didn’t read it to the end, but did you find anything in the 2nd half to redeem it?

I disliked ALL of the main characters’ voices. Gretchen’s: melodramatic; Archie: hoarse and unmanly; Susan’s: just irritating. Plot was meandering and the story was not believable. This had good reviews, but i just didn’t see it.

What a disappointment, especially after Stephen King’s rave review. NO character development, like why was the Black kid even in the novel? And, sure, a life long criminal and scumbag, meets a woman,, falls in love IN A WEEK and is going to change his life and become a model husband and father. Too unrealistic for me.

A little redundant. Book could have been cut
In half because so many of the life and death
Situations were somewhat similar. And the character Natasha was not that believable.
