I'm a fan of the River of London series. This story was good but not a favorite. I had to force myself to finish listening because of the narrator. Her pronunciation of "parka" and "library" were painful. Both words were over used. And the voices she used for the male characters were horrible.

The story was very juvenile and predictable. It is a children's book but I did not see that in the description. Even if I were a child, I would not like the way NPH talks down to the audience. Also the jarring "special" sounds, such as bells ringing and clapping, were disruptive to the flow of the story and, in some places, were so loud that I couldn't hear the story. I also didn't like the magic lessons that were scattered throughout the book.

How could the performance have been better?

Have a different narrator.

Any additional comments?

I will not listen to another book read by this narrator. Her acting was amateurish and annoying.

Would you try another book from Peter Clines and/or Jay Snyder and Khristine Hvam ?

No. The book is repetitive. It consists of very little character development and the plot consists of never ending fights that are indistinguishable from each other.

What could Peter Clines have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Started over with some characters the reader might actually care about. The beginning is promising but about the time I became involved with the character, the focus shifted to others. The characters were by and large unlikeable and flat. Even when a back story was attempted, it was fighting with a few vague sentences about a relationship between two heroes.

Would you be willing to try another one of Jay Snyder and Khristine Hvam ’s performances?

No. Their performances were stilted and flat. It was difficult to distinguish between the characters. It also seemed that the characters in "conversations" were recorded at separate times and then spliced together.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment and boredom. I just drove for an hour and it was endless fighting. The characters had transportation trouble, zombies are coming, destroy their brains...for an hour.

Any additional comments?

This was a waste of a money. I read the reviews and they were very misleading.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Since I listen to this primarily in the car or when I'm weaving, I don't feel that the time was wasted but there seemed to be much more set up and description. A little too much. I thought the "Grandmother" character was a little over done and the problem with the wall and conversations with the Guardians could have been shortened for more flow to the story. These plot points seemed to be used as padding.

Would you be willing to try another book from Kristen Britain? Why or why not?

I have already started listening to the next book, but if it is as slow as the third book, I don't know if I'll buy another.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The performance was good with real differences between the characters.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No.

What did you like best about The Warlock in Spite of Himself? What did you like least?

The production of this audiobook was awful. The narrator was so much louder than some of the character voices that I had to adjust the volume. In some places the sound effects were so loud that I couldn't understand the dialog and some of the voices were so over done that, once again they were not understandable. A straight reading of the story would have been an improvement.

I did enjoy the story. It was not great literature but it was entertaining, the parts I could hear.
