Great narration…loved getting 3 stories for one credit, but these three weren’t as captivating as the first three stories.

This one got me
Reviewed: 03-02-25
I don’t cry easily, but this story got me. Having been in an abusive relationship (he died~ leukemia), and having been left with 6 children to raise, I thought I did my best and having a difficult relationship with one daughter in particular, I saw it all through different eyes. You can do your level best, but some times, that’s not what overrides life.
The twists in this one! I couldn’t put this down…listened almost straight through. Better than Stephen King in terms of twists you don’t always see coming.

Story
One sunny August afternoon, the residents of Cedar Close throw their annual summer barbecue. Children play in the cherry-tree lined street, tables are laden with food, and the wine is flowing. For Laurie Mills, it’s her first time meeting the neighbours. And it’s the first time she discovers her husband, Robert, is having an affair. Cedar Close has always been a nice place to live - a quiet suburban street where everyone looks out for one another and bad things don’t happen. Until late one evening, when Robert Mills is found dead in his bedroom.

Story
Martha Ratliff conceded long ago that she’d likely spend her life alone. She was fine with it, happy with her solo existence, stimulated by her work as a librarian in Maine. But then she met Alan, a charming and sweet-natured salesman whose job took him on the road for half the year. When he asked her to marry him, she said yes, even though he still felt a little bit like a stranger.

Better than expected.

Some wooden performances that could be explained by the idiosyncrasies of each character, but the plot had a little more meat than expected.

Story
Eight-year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

Was AI used to narrate?

I stuck with the story because it was interesting, but the narrator did not make it easy. Mispronunciations, flat expression, and the male voices were a joke. What were they thinking? If the character was on the spectrum as has been suggested, there were other ways to suggest it than by this wooden, lifeless narration.

This has been sitting in my wishlist for awhile and as a 60 yr. old swimmer, this gave me a boost I didn’t know I needed. Not going for any major swims right now, but to hear how she she spoke about swimming in a way I’m familiar with. I’ll probably never get stung by a jellyfish, but now I understand how much that sucks! Thank you for the brief, but exciting adventure you shared with us!
