Story
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

More than funny

This book gave me some more insight into the history of apartheid in South Africa. I've visited museums in Johannesburg, I learned about it in school here in the Netherlands. I was acquainted with the different labels: white, coloured, Indian, black, but now I understand much better what these mean. (And also why my cousin keeps telling me I'm considered coloured even though looking at my colour I would've thought I'd be black) So in that sense this book was educational.
I have a ton of educational books that I still have to get through though. This book is funny and that's why it only took me 3 days to finish. I laughed so much listening these last three days I think my stomach abs profited.
What was sometimes confusing for me was that the author sometimes jumps ahead or back about a decade in time without warning, leaving me to reorient myself. I made it through the end though, it's not that big of a deal. Another thing I'd say is that I didn't appreciate all of his vocabulary. The author uses more profanity than I care for. If there was a censored version I would've bought that.
Overall though, Noah tells a good story and challenges listeners to think about race, criminal justice and poverty from different viewpoints. I appreciate his whit, intelligence, insight and honesty as he did this. I hope this book will be picked up by those who don't usually think about race relations and also by those who are used to dealing with just one culture, because by reading this book you'll get to travel through different cultures and learn to get a better understanding of what it means to be of one culture while navigating through another.
Finally, the last few minutes of the book especially blessed my soul. May the Jesus that saved Trevor Noah's mum keep Trevor Noah safe too.

This was a really good book. I'm happy it showed up as a suggestion. It calls me to be more aware of the glory of God in my life. I think I'll listen to it again soon.
