Story
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

Don’t mess around. Buy it, listen to it, laugh to it, see if you have what it needs takes to live by it. (Hint: you do.)

Story
Three months after George Saunders gave a graduation address at Syracuse University, a transcript of that speech was posted on the website of The New York Times, where its simple, uplifting message struck a deep chord. Within days, it had been shared more than one million times. Why? Because Saunders’ words tap in to a desire in all of us to lead kinder, more fulfilling lives. Powerful, funny, and wise, Congratulations, by the Way is an inspiring message from one of today’s most influential and original writers.

Congrats, by the way!
You’ve just found the best commencement speech there is. I graduated undergraduate school this year. I majored in English, studying creative writing, and it’s a dream of mine to study with Mr. Saunders at Syracuse for my masters.
Throughout my life as a writer, Saunders has taught me more than anybody. About writing, well of course. But moreover, about life.
Humble, approachable, charming, and inarguably authentic, this 12 minutes very likely just saved me 30-40 years of mistakes. I hope you find the same value as I did in it.
