I checked this out cuz I saw they have made a movie out of it and I'm a big fan of detective novels and hadn't heard of this one. I now see why I haven't heard of this series. also I really didn't find the narrator engaging oh, he did a serviceable job but to me the voice just didn't match with the idea of a seasoned Detective.

this book was three times longer than it needed to be. I listened to the audiobook. Imagine being at the last 45 minutes of the book and just not carrying anymore. I've been trying for about four hours to get through the last 45 minutes I keep turning it off. there's no payoff There's no explanation for all the coincidences I'm really really disappointed in this book. performance was great though got to give him that

what a bore!
Reviewed: 07-11-21
Grover Gardner is always awesome and I'll listen to almost anything he does. This novel was just completely boring. the protagonist if you could call him at walks around and has people tell him what the story is and apparently the story happened way before the narrative. Epic epic fail. think of the difference between a well-written sex scene versus a third person retelling of a sex scene that happened several years ago. That's basically the entire book except there's no sex so sorry to get your hopes up. It's a guy walking around and eventually meeting people who tell him what happened several years ago over and over and over again. they had a good premise but Jesus it was boring

Story
Grieving widow or black widow? The day Joan Medford buried her husband was a fateful one - because before the day was out she'd meet the two men who would change her life forever. Forced to take a job waitressing to support herself and her child, Joan finds herself caught between the handsome young schemer whose touch she comes to crave and the wealthy older man whose touch repels her…but who otherwise would make a tempting husband number two. It's a classic Cain triangle - brutal and sexual and stark - that can only end in death. But for whom, the guilty…or the innocent?
