Story
If there's one thing seventeen-year-old Maverick Carter knows, it's that a real man takes care of his family. As the son of a former gang legend, Mav does that the only way he knows how: dealing for the King Lords. With this money he can help his mom, who works two jobs while his dad's in prison. Life's not perfect, but with a fly girlfriend and a cousin who always has his back, Mav's got everything under control. Until, that is, Maverick finds out he's a father. But it's not so easy to sling dope, finish school, and raise a child.

amazing story, amazing performance

I love Angie Thomas's stories, and this is no exception. Maybe her best yet. It broke my heart when a character was introduced from THUG, because I knew some of their fates. Every chapter had me living in this world for the first time again. Their world is authentic, and real.
As for the performance, if I could have given 20 stars I would have. I would listen to this narrator read absolutely anything and be grateful. He is so incredibly talented, I had a hard time remembering that this WASN'T his personal memoir. He did a glorious job.

Story
In this deeply scary and intensely unnerving debut novel, Jake and a woman known only as "The Girlfriend" are on a drive to visit his parents at their secluded farm. But when Jake leaves "The Girlfriend" stranded at an abandoned high school, what follows is a twisted unraveling of the darkest unease, an exploration into psychological frailty, and an ending as suspenseful as The Usual Suspects and as haunting as Misery.

Amazing voice acting - overrated story.

I struggled to get through this story. It's a slow build up, interspersed with some good, tense scenes. I wasn't looking for a boldly scary, jumps are kind of story - I wanted something slow, creepy-feeling building, unsettling, etc. This sort of scratched that itch. Sometimes it was good, but other times...I don't know it seemed like a compilation of horror lit tropes stacked on top of the other. It's quite clearly
A) the author's debut novel, reeking of inexperience in the genre and
B) not grounded in reality (which frustrates me, as I don't like books that take place mostly in the characters head, talking to themselves)
I thought it was a solid first novel, and I can see how this author could gain a lot of skill and be a great writer. They would need to check the tropes, and/or make them their own, or make them mean something. There was so little meaning behind the scares other than being scary.
I really wanted the ending to be good, to be an amazing payoff for all these little creepy moments, the unsettling one-liners, etc. Something to tie it all together...and instead I got something far more anticlimactic. I don't think this book is terrible, but it's definitely not worth the hype.

Story
When New Yorker Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home and quality time with the man she hopes to marry. But Nick has failed to give his girlfriend a few key details. One, that his childhood home looks like a palace; two, that he grew up riding in more private planes than cars; and three, that he just happens to be the country’s most eligible bachelor.

Entertaining read from start to finish

Part satire, part glamor fiction, a peek into a world rarely seen by Westerners. The culture of Singapore feels real to me in this novel, and it's like I'm back there tasting the popiah and hawker food myself. Loved all the characters, they were vivid and vibrant! I can't wait to read the next one.

Story
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.
