Story
When it happens to you, you will be surprised. That thing they say about how you knew all the time, but just weren't facing it? That might be the case, but nevertheless, there you will be. Molly Ringwald mines the complexities of modern relationships in this gripping and nuanced collection of interlinked stories. Writing with a deep compassion for human imperfection, Ringwald follows a Los Angeles family and their friends and neighbors while they negotiate the hazardous terrain of everyday life - revealing the deceptions, heartbreak, and vulnerability familiar to us all.

and wasn't disappointed. She really did a nice job in developing her characters. Her story was only too relatable, and unfolded realistically. Her narration was well involved in the story, and totally believable.

Story
When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early 40s, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it at first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

riveting

I listened to this story while travelling from northern Alberta to northern Mexico. The 4 days went by quickly while I got to know and sympathise with the characters. They were well developed and the listener could make out the characters immediately thanks to the excellent narration of Tom Hollander. The intricate dynamics between the characters was also easy and interesting to follow. Themes of poverty, intergenerational despair, abuse, mental illness, the complications of bullying, and stories behind closed doors intertwine towards a dramatic ending. It is a story that helps one to realize that things are not the way the seem to be. However, it is a story from England, so the English accent is a bit to adjust to, as well as references to things British.

To five-year-old Jack, Room is the entire world. It is where he was born and grew up; it's where he lives with his Ma as they learn and read and eat and sleep and play. At night, his Ma shuts him safely in the wardrobe, where he is meant to be asleep when Old Nick visits. Room is home to Jack, but to Ma, it is the prison where Old Nick has held her captive for seven years. Through determination, ingenuity, and fierce motherly love, Ma has created a life for Jack. But she knows it's not enough...not for her or for him.

What other book might you compare Room to and why?
it was truly unique, in a very good way.
Which scene was your favorite?
When it was realized that "getting some" was Jack breast feeding
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
??
Any additional comments?
I listen to audiobooks when I am exercising, so really need the books to be captivating so that I am motivated to go exercise. This book was wonderfully performed and the colloquial English that Jack spoke was totally believable and understandable. It really held my attention and concentration.

Story
Marjorie Morningstar is a love story. It presents one of the greatest characters in modern fiction: Marjorie, the pretty 17-year-old who left the respectability of New York's Central Park West to join the theater, live in the teeming streets of Greenwich Village, and seek love in the arms of a brilliant, enigmatic writer.

Anna Karenina because they are both period pieces and follow the journey of a girl into womanhood.

Who was the most memorable character of Marjorie Morningstar and why?
The uncle, but I never did understand what his name was.
