Pleasantly Surprised
Reviewed: 10-24-21
I bought this book thinking I was getting a book about the mountain men that lived in and explored the Rocky Mountains. I was shocked when I started listening and realized it was an apocalyptic zombie novel. At first I was disappointed, but I decided to give it a chance and was pleasantly surprised by how entertaining it was. I listened to all three books straight through. I couldn’t stop listening. I can’t wait to listen to more books by this author.

Disappointing entry by Greaney. Seems rushed and unedited. Dual narration doesn’t really work; no new perspective.

Roberts nails it. Best book in the series. He has mastered this narrative and fully developed his characters. It's not enough to create an interesting protagonist. An author must write interesting companions that are multidimensional. Roberts has done this in this episode.

Great Start!

I read this book several years ago. I enjoyed it then and was happy to see it on audible. The only downside to this entertaining story is the narration. Jeff Hayes does not have a Viking-Warrior voice. His voice is more mid-western farm boy. However, his voice is not insurmountable and the tale is still enjoyable.

One of the best and most convincing books on apologetics I've read/listened to. Dinesh puts words to ideas I've believed to be true since I was a child but could not articulate.

Story
Like the men whose epic stories Jon Krakauer has told in his previous bestsellers, Pat Tillman was an irrepressible individualist and iconoclast. In May 2002, Tillman walked away from his $3.6 million NFL contract to enlist in the United States Army. He was deeply troubled by 9/11, and he felt a strong moral obligation to join the fight against al-Qaeda and the Taliban. Two years later, he died on a desolate hillside in southeastern Afghanistan.

Did Keith Olbermann Write This?
Reviewed: 06-10-10
If you're looking for the story of Pat Tillman, do not choose this book. Pat Tillman's story here is just the medium with which Krakauer attacks President Bush and his administration. This is the first audio book that I will not finish. About five hours in I could no longer stomach his unbelievable bias against President Bush. President Clinton's lack of action in the war against terrorism (garage bomb in the Twin Towers, 1998 embassy attacks in Africa, the USS Cole attack, etc.) are glossed over as minor incidents that hardly require mentioning. If he had credited Clinton with any of the responsibility I might have been able to continue. However, the Keith Olbermann-like insane rantings soon obscured the Tillman story. Hopefully there is another less maniacally bent version of the heroic Pat Tillman story available in the Audible database for those interested in this great American.

Excellent listen. Nick Boulton's character accents and dramatic reading are topnotch. I felt like I was listening to an ancient recording. I love historical fiction and although this book was no Pressfield novel it was still an outstanding first novel for Sidebottom. I am looking forward to King of Kings. You can't go wrong with a main character that is a German-Roman General and believes in the Norse Gods. Awesome! Where's my gladius, or better yet, my war axe?!
