Story
>When South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a herd of "rogue" wild elephants on his Thula Thula game reserve in Zululand, his common sense told him to refuse. But he was the herd's last chance of survival: they would be killed if he wouldn't take them. In order to save their lives, Anthony took them in. In the years that followed he became a part of their family. And as he battled to create a bond with the elephants, he came to realize that they had a great deal to teach him about life, loyalty, and freedom.

Love this account! I've never had (and, sadly, will never have) the opportunity to do the AT. I love hiking so this was essentially a vicarious journey for me.
I would have preferred that Mr. Alt had availed himself of a good editor to correct the grammatical errors and areas of awkward construction that are inherent in keeping a daily journal. Such mistakes are a personal peeve of mine, however, so I have learned to "wink at them" instead of ditching a perfectly good story and robbing myself of the enjoyment it brings.
I did not care for the narrator's performance. His pronunciation of "Appalachian" grated on this West Virginia gal's ears and nerves. I never could get the feeling that he was really "in tune" with the book. In order to tolerate his reading, I had to increase the speed beyond what I normally like. But maybe that's just me.

Story
Winston Churchill is perhaps the most important political figure of the 20th century. His great oratory and leadership during the Second World War were only part of his huge breadth of experience and achievement. Studying his life is a fascinating way to imbibe the history of his era and gain insight into key events that have shaped our time.

could not finish this one
Reviewed: 10-29-17
Had to quit after 2½ hrs., although I was enjoying the story. I just could not listen any longer to the narrator's very unpleasant voice. Like Churchill's own voice, the narrator's is gravelly, but it lacks the warm intonation and resonance that softened Churchill's. The result is a very harsh, grating sound. Will have to read the book.

Hutton has now written a fascinating full biography of Sergeant Reckless, who earned two Purple Hearts for her heroic efforts, among other military decorations. Hutton has spoken with the marines who fought alongside Reckless and tells the complete and captivating tale of how a would-be Korean racehorse became one of the greatest Marine Corps wartime heroes. Sgt. Reckless brings the legend back to life more than half a century later.

Superb in every respect! My cousin gave his life at Chosin before Sgt. Reckless joined the Marine 1st Div. there. Maybe his story added pathos to this wonderful record of an unlikely heroine. A soldier in every sense of the word, this gentle, rascally, trusting, affectionate, determined, brilliant, hilariously funny, and lovely little Mongolian filly kept the Marines supplied with critical ammunition in the heat of battle. It was her job throughout battles, to carry several heavy (75lb/ea) rounds of ammunition up a steep, rocky hillside, in the line of fire, to the troops whose very lives depended on her cargo. Twice during these strenuous climbs, she was hit by enemy fire. Amazingly, the Sergeant never faltered, continuing her nonstop deliveries, ignoring her wounds. I've listened to this book twice already, and not for the last time.

Stephen 'Pista' Nasser was 13 years old when the Nazis whisked him and his family away from their home in Hungary to Auschwitz. His memories of that terrifying experience are still vivid, and his love for his brother Andris still brings a husky tone to his voice when he remembers the terrible ordeal they endured together. Stephen's account of the Holocaust, told in the refreshingly direct and optimistic language of a young boy, will help every listener to understand that the Holocaust was real.

A good book ruined by terrible narration.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I can't think of anyone to whom I would recommend this book through Audible. As is to be expected of any book detailing personal experience in the Holocaust, this one is painful and very disturbing. Its downfall is completely in the narrator. This man simply did not have a feel for the content. I tried to listen to it several times, and finally just gave up, because I could not get past the narrator's poor inflection and general interpretation of the text. His intonation and expression were completely and perpetually out of sync with the words he was reading. I would have exchanged the book if I could have, but it was not eligible for return. Therefore, I must consider this as $$ lost, and will get the book from the library to read. Don't waste your $$ on it here.
How could the performance have been better?
The narrator of a book with such heavy subject matter needs to have a feel for what he is reading. Tragic occurrences and very painful experiences should be read only by someone who has empathy for the plight of the writer.

She interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to new data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves.

what a read!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
everyone should read this book: a documentary that enriched me immensely!
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Warmth of Other Suns?
ida mae's courage when the mob bent on cruelty came to her door in the night.
another long moment was driving across the desert with dr. foster and having no place to rest or shower.
Have you listened to any of Robin Miles’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
no, but i'm going to!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
my overall most-of-the-time feeling was of being appalled at the ugly bigotry of the south and how it had flourished for so long. what a way to look at other human beings! i was always smiling when i heard from ida mae. unfortunately dr. foster and george starling did not ever reach a full measure of peace and their lives were always dimmed by frustration and disappointment. i felt that ida mae had a quality within and a deep spiritual peace that enabled her to succeed fully in reaching her modest goals and thus achieved a happier life than either of the two men. she really inspired me.
Any additional comments?
ms. wilkerson is a compelling writer. she took a huge project on, made it manageable, readable, and introduced these three representatives of the great migration in such a way that i really knew them. her depth of involvement in their lives in order to document their stories and her obvious deep love and respect for them and their lives were obvious.

If you could sum up All Creatures Great and Small in three words, what would they be?
perfectly satisfying life
Who was your favorite character and why?
jim, of course. he has opened the door to his heart and mind for all of us. he is so honest about himself, including his self-proclaimed shortcomings. has laughed at himself in these stories and has invited us to laugh along with him. what an amazing man he is!
Which scene was your favorite?
absolutely impossible to say for sure, but i'm partial to horses, so i'd say the story of the gypsy's foundered pony.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
if i could have, i would have!
Any additional comments?
herriott is a master story-teller, open and generous, funny and tender. the choice of christopher timothy as narrator just had to be. . .after all his is the voice everyone associates with jim's, familiar from the televised episodes of 'all creatures great and small'.
