Holly, an everyday relatable hero
Reviewed: 06-16-25
I love this series of stories about Holly Gibney. I must admit, I am not often a fan of men writing women, especially those women on the spectrum. Mr. King does an incredible job writing the nuances of Holly, her vices and quirks, without making her seem infantalized or incapable. I especially love this book in the series following Holly and Bill Hodges as Mr. King explores how the scariest thing is the one we may first think of as impossible. The other books feature a male narrator and I loved how we finally got a story from Holly's perspective in her own "voice." I love Justine Lupe as an actress on the screen and I feel like her voice lent Holly the missing warmth in the other books when voiced by a man. Wonderful book and series, thank you Mr. King for another tantalizing read and listen.

Story
Emmy Harlow is a witch but not a very powerful one - in part because she hasn't been home to the magical town of Thistle Grove in years. Her self-imposed exile has a lot to do with a complicated family history and a desire to forge her own way in the world, and only the very tiniest bit to do with Gareth Blackmoore, heir to the most powerful magical family in town and casual breaker of hearts and destroyer of dreams.

Cute story with good character development

Nice little story with endearing characters and a well developed story and good world building. I wish the other books in the series kept the primary focus on Emi and her future but I am excited to see how the other story lines unfold.

Story
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

A wonderful concept I've thought of often
Reviewed: 10-02-22
First of all, if you happen to be like me and a one star review will scare you off, ignore the bad review on this. Its a captivating read that is well written and delightfully narrated. This is the first book I've read from Matt Haig and I was pleasant surprised. Generally I find male authors writing a lead female character off putting, but the character of Nora and her essence was endearing. I have thought of this concept often and I love the execution of the story. This is a book I will be purchasing in hardback and revisiting on a yearly basis.

Story
For Milo, everything’s a bore. When a tollbooth mysteriously appears in his room, he drives through only because he’s got nothing better to do. But on the other side, things seem different. Milo visits the Island of Conclusions (you get there by jumping), learns about time from a ticking watchdog named Tock, and even embarks on a quest to rescue Rhyme and Reason. Somewhere along the way, Milo realizes something astonishing. Life is far from dull. In fact, it’s exciting beyond his wildest dreams.

My favorite book in the world
Reviewed: 06-23-22
I first read this book when I was 8 years old and in second grade circa 2002.
To say it changed my life is an understatement.
This was my first long chapter book that I picked up. I remember looking at it and thinking, this is going to take forever.
I devoured the book in a matter of days. I think this book sparked my love of words, irony, sarcasm and travel.
Every year since I've made the journey through the Tollbooth with Milo. Sometimes when I pick up this book I'm in the middle of my own Doldrums or on the Island of Conclusions; but Milo, Tok and Humbug always seem to bring me back to the land of Wisdom.
This book is filled to the brim with life lessons and I give a copy to those closest to me in the hope that they too will realize that everything is possible as long as they don't know it's impossible.
Norton Juster, sir, I hope to one day meet you and have you sign my very tattered copy. Thank you for this book and all the hope it's given me through the years.
