Story
Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

A fabulous history lesson
Reviewed: 11-21-23
It's scary to see the parallels of this period with our current social and political mess. Rachel Maddow is scholarly and absorbing as a narrator.

interesting story... boring reader
Reviewed: 01-25-23
A comprehensive look at spoiled people descending into an empty life at the end. The effort to hide the documentation of suspected (and actual) treason is interesting. 17 Carnations is better. The reader/author is monotonous, and mispronounced some words entirely.

Boring and simplistic.

Dullest reading and so-called guidance for meditation. Background was a thudding piano and the reader was mechanical.

Story
When Singer sewing machine tycoon Edward Clark built a luxury apartment building on Manhattan’s Upper West Side in the late 1800s, it was derisively dubbed “the Dakota” for being as far from the center of the downtown action as its namesake territory on the nation’s western frontier. Despite its remote location, the quirky German Renaissance-style castle, with its intricate façade, peculiar interior design, and gargoyle guardians peering down on Central Park, was an immediate hit, particularly among the city’s well-heeled intellectuals and artists.

A boring look at boring people

Not what I expected. Just whining about how people of "quality" have disappeared and quirky chic oddities have driven the building into a cheesy haven of lazy, selfish yuppies. Pretty boring.
