Story
Have you ever wondered how the God of love and grace, introduced by Jesus—a Jewish rabbi in Israel two thousand years ago who proclaimed His mission not to judge the world but to save it—morphed into a Western fundamentalist god of fear, wrath, and violence? This transformation is rooted in a twisted theology marked by misinterpretations, flawed translations, and verses stripped from their original context. In this book, I aim to expose and refute the doctrine most central to the destructive ideology known as "Christian Fundamentalism."

Excellent and essential reading
Reviewed: 03-19-25
The author carefully addresses and compellingly refutes key issues that distort our understanding of the gospel, of the character of God and the assumptions that shape our perspective of life itself. If that sounds like a powerful and profound message, it is. I cannot recommend this strongly enough. I will be sharing it with others.

Story
For centuries, many have been taught to believe that the Bible presents a vivid picture of a fiery Hell, where God sadistically torments most of humanity by burning their skin for all eternity. But is this really the picture Scripture paints? Were you raised to view Hell through the lens of the Augustinian-Calvinist tradition, perhaps too intimidated ever to question it? If so, this book is for you. In it, we will challenge the fundamentalist perspective on Hellfire by exploring the original context in which the biblical teachings on Hell were written.

Excellent
Reviewed: 03-15-25
Over the past 45 years, I have formally and informally studied, as well as read and listened to many, many books pertaining to theology, scripture, history, salvation (soteriology), etc. Dr, Bar engages in a thorough, detailed and rigorous analysis of those texts that form the basis for our understanding of hell, punishment and God's wrath. While there is some unavoidable redundancy in the book, I find his findings compelling and conclusive. Our understanding of God's character and the "criteria" for how we identify the purpose and priorities of life are key determinants in how we see, evaluate an interact with life. The focus of this book addresses the issues that are central -- no, definitive -- in shaping that understanding. I strongly recommend this book and will be sharing copies with friends.
As for the audio book, the narrator does an exceptional job engaging the listener's interest and conveying the meaning of the text. (Some of the pronunciations are a bit different than mine, but when dealing with ancient languages this is not uncommon.). I would gladly listen to other books he has narrated. For those, like me, who now find themselves so consumed during the work day with the demands of their jobs, a well-read audiobook that provides compelling content is well worth my time. I strongly recommend this and will be listening to and reading more of Dr. Bar's work.

Story
It is often said that “no one spoke more about hell than Jesus.” This book examines the words of the Savior of the World to see if that statement is true. What if the teaching that there is a place of never-ending punishment is the result of bad interpretations of things Jesus said? And what if the teaching that there is a “hell” was not passed on by the original disciples? Is never-ending torment consistent with what Jesus said about love and forgiveness?

Compelling and Practical Encourage
Reviewed: 04-10-24
The author uses an episode from the life of David to “unpack” the ways we can face suffering and turn it into a unique opportunity for growth — growth that leads to a new, richer, more meaningful and, yes, better life. It is a book about turning suffering into a priceless means of transformation. While it is unflinching in addressing the character of real suffering, it remains both eminently practical and deeply encouraging.

Story
Everything about the gospel message leads to the cross, and proceeds from the cross. In fact, within the narrative of Scripture, the crucifixion of Jesus is literally the crux of the story—the axis upon which the biblical story turns. But it would be a mistake to think we could sum up the significance of the crucifixion in a tidy sentence or two. That kind of thinking only insulates us from the magnificence of what God has done. In our ongoing quest to make meaning of the cross, we need to recognize that this conversation will never conclude-that there is always something more to be said.

The world’s greatest bodybuilder. The world’s highest-paid movie star. The leader of the world’s sixth-largest economy. That these are the same person sounds like the setup to a joke, but this is no joke. This is Arnold Schwarzenegger. And this did not happen by accident. Arnold’s stratospheric success happened as part of a process. As the result of clear vision, big thinking, hard work, direct communication, resilient problem-solving, open-minded curiosity, and a commitment to giving back. All of it guided by the one lesson Arnold’s father hammered into him above all: be useful.

I have read a number of books about him, but I think this one gives greater insight into his mindset than any of them. And that is a gift. Whatever you think of this larger than life man, he is more than that. Get this book. It may help you realize your own larger than life - or at least biggest - goals.

The classic story of a family's pilgrimage into the Orthodox Church. Veiled in the smoke of incense, the Eastern Orthodox Church has long been an enigma to the Western world. Yet, as Frederica Mathewes-Green discovered, it is a vital, living faith, rich in ritual beauty and steadfast in integrity. Utilizing the framework of the Orthodox calendar, Mathewes-Green chronicles a year in the life of her small Orthodox mission church, eloquently illustrating the joys and blessings an ancient faith can bring to the worshipers of today.

A gentle, warm and accessible introduction to a faith that is so deep and rich it would take multiple lifetimes to begin to realize a fraction of the wealth it offers. The author has done a wonderful job of giving a true taste of the height and breadth of the faith. I am one of those men of whom she spoke, driven by exhaustive research and conviction to the faith, yet I could not have begun - even 26 years later - to express what she has ad concisely or properly as she has. More could I have done a so with the warmth of spirit found here; it truly conveys how it “feels” to live and grow in the faith. I can not more strongly recommend this book. It is a true blessing.
