Terrible narration and not funny at all
Reviewed: 03-02-22
I absolutely loved the first three in this series and was so excited for this one! Unfortunately, with the new narrator, it was painful to listen to. The narrator only has two voices, her normal voice and then a near growl. Everything St. Just says sounds like he's angry at everyone and super judgmental and haughty, and everything everyone else said- even the woman with the "melodious voice" - was said like a woman trying to sound like a man with a big secret and failing miserably. Now I wonder if it wasn't just Davina Porter I liked more than G.M. Malliet. The first three were narrated by Porter and were an absolute delight! This? Ugh. I'm returning it and I'm not even finishing it.

Story
A body always tells a story - but this child’s was a blank page. Rita reached for the lantern. She trained its light on the child’s face. "Who are you?" she murmured, but the face said as little as the rest of her. It was impossible to tell whether, in life, these blunt and unfinished features had borne the imprint of prettiness, timid watchfulness, or sly mischief. If there had once been curiosity or placidity or impatience here, life had not had time to etch it into permanence. Only a very short time ago, the body and soul of this little girl had still been securely attached.

A gentle story about stories
Reviewed: 12-22-18
I got this one because I loved The Thirteenth Tale by Setterfield. This one was entertaining enough, but I wouldn't listen to it again. It's really a story about stories, and it's a gentle, rather slow-moving tale that revels in the mundane, so it's comfortable, homey sort of. I came to care about the characters, but soon there were so many and I kept getting them mixed up. It didn't really take much from the story, because by that point I was just listening for the soothing effect it had on me. I liked the narrator, but for a few of the voices.

Christmas Cozy!
Reviewed: 12-06-18
This series is just plain fun. Flavia continues her amateur sleuthing while her sisters keep up their facade of hating her. New and old characters make the story hard to put aside, and this one being a Christmas cozy made it just right for the season! As usual, Jayne Entwistle's performance is perfection!

I don't know if I'm all hormonal with turning 50 or what, but this book had me near crying so many times! It's just so packed full of inspiration and wisdom and maybe what is left of "the American Dream." The Obamas, no matter what one thinks of their politics, are such a dignified couple, both someone we can all be proud of and aspire to emulate. She, like her husband, inspires a renewed hope, even amidst this nadir of political leadership.

I have another couple of characters to add to my list of favorites. Walt and Henry are like my literary teddy bears that I'm going to hug before I go to bed at night. They are sweet and funny and just flawed enough to be endearing. The Wyoming setting is just lovely, and George Guidall's narration is perfect for Walt!

I wanted to learn a bit about my chosen state's history, and this was a great historical fiction choice! Telling the story of the McIvey's from 1858 to 1968, I learned a lot I didn't know about Florida, and in a pleasant way. George Guidall was the perfect narrator for this!

I hear the series improves...

...but I had to listen to this first. I was looking for something a bit grittier than my normal read, and I wanted something funny. This was supposed to fit the bill. It was okay. There were a lot of people to keep track of, and I didn't really care about either mystery and how they got solved. And Riordan describes every move in the fights, which is pretty boring. However, I did sort of like Tres and his mom and there are parts of the story that tell you this author is a great storyteller. So I'm going to let this simmer for awhile before deciding if I'm going to move on to the next one in the series.

The book had me laughing out loud and carrying my phone with me everywhere I went so I didn't miss a word. I love watching Poirot, so listening to this spoof was super fun.
