Story
Girt Nation introduces Alfred Deakin, the Liberal necromancer whose dead advisors made Australia a better place to live, and Banjo Paterson, the jihadist who called on God and the Prophet to drive the Australian infidels from the Sudan ‘like sand before the gale’. And meet Catherine Helen Spence, the feminist polymath who envisaged a utopian future of free contraceptives, easy divorce and immigration restrictions to prevent the ‘Chinese coming to destroy all we have struggled for’!

Another dent in the armor of dour academic history, volume 3 is just as irreverent, just as memorable, and apparently just as well researched as vol’s 1 &2. A fair poke in the eye for everyone, to help you spot and laugh at your own flaws and failings, by looking in the rear-view mirror of a modern state.

Story
Girt. No word could better capture the essence of Australia.... In this hilarious history, David Hunt reveals the truth of Australia's past, from megafauna to Macquarie - the cock-ups and curiosities, the forgotten eccentrics and Eureka moments that have made us who we are. Girt introduces forgotten heroes like Mary McLoghlin, transported for the crime of "felony of sock", and Trim the cat, who beat a French monkey to become the first animal to circumnavigate Australia.

A memorable bit of history told with earnest irreverence and a hearty gift for a well-told yarn. Sprinkled throughout with jabs and eye-pokes for everyone! Right up there (and you know where!) with “1066 And All That” and other modern should-be classics.

A landmark in travel writing, this is the incredible true story of Heinrich Harrer’s escape across the Himalayas to Tibet, set against the backdrop of the Second World War. Heinrich Harrer, already one of the greatest mountaineers of his time, was climbing in the Himalayas when war broke out in Europe. He was imprisoned by the British in India but succeeded in escaping and fled to Tibet.

Story
Millions of words have poured forth about man's trip to the moon, but until now few people have had a sense of the most engrossing side of the adventure: namely, what went on in the minds of the astronauts themselves - in space, on the moon, and even during certain odysseys on earth. It is this, the inner life of the astronauts, that Tom Wolfe describes with his almost uncanny empathetic powers that made The Right Stuff a classic.

The Meaning of Python
Reviewed: 03-14-20
I will never forget my first exposure to Monty Python’s Flying Circus - a gift extraordinaire for a teenage misfit. The varied subsequent work of the crew is a rich addition to our lives. This reading reminds me once again how much I love a great story, well told; and how much better when the story-teller really enjoys (and laughs through) the memories and the telling.
This I shall listen to again. And again.
