The book is absolutely great. I had no preconceived idea about the storyline and I listened to the narration unprimed with no expectations. The storyline is fantastic and the narration superb with full cast. The ending leaves you hanging, wanting to read the second book in the series. I will definitely be buying it right away to listen to it.

Not to mention but I have not watched any episodes of “ his dark materials” yet and would like to read the trilogy before watching it.

Overall, highly recommended read/listen.

The central idea of a dispatcher was very novel to me and that kept me interested in the story throughout. John Scalzi does not get into the science of how people can be dispatched back to life just before they actually die and that made it somewhat of a "paranormal" phenomenon for my scientifically oriented mind. This was my first Scalzi book and I found it quite entertaining. From the reviews I gather that it is not a typical Scalzi book. Overall a great storyline and very good narration by Zachary Quinto. At some point I will certainly listen to more of Scalzi's works.

I got very little new information about octopuses from this book. The descriptions of author's visits to the aquarium, learning to scuba dive, and scuba dive vacations are unnecessary and quite boring. Much lighter on the science of octopuses and the " the wonder of consciousness" is basically anthropomorphism, with the author assigning emotions, thoughts, feelings, and opinions on captive octopuses based on the subjective assessment of their appearance and behavior during her encounters with them at the aquarium. The book lacks any solid marine biological research into cephalopod intelligence. This is more a personal journey than the science of octopuses. The reading was very dramatized and overly emotional.

I enjoyed listening to this story of an old man who appears bitter on the surface but has a soft heart that is also big to accommodate and help a lot of people he comes across. We all have known some folks like Ove in our lives and the story touches us in different ways and reminds us that people are not what they first appear to be. At times the story becomes too predictable but never really becomes boring. I recommend reading listening to the book when you want something that makes you feel warm and fuzzy. “AUDIBLE 20 REVIEW SWEEPSTAKES ENTRY”

I started this book with no expectations and was totally thrilled by the idea and the story within the first 30 minutes of listening to it. The plot revolves around a woman who thinks that she is exceptionally affected by coincidences and the bad ones. She comes across and finally meets the professor who is a leading authority on coincidences and the interaction between them is absolutely mind-blowing. Very well written and well narrated book. I will definitely read more from JW Ironminger! I am glad I went by other reviews for this book on Audible and decided to listen.

Where does The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This audiobook ranks at the topmost tier. The story is great, the performance is great and the book transports me to Africa. I have never been to Africa but I have some friends from there and I can identify the values and thinking that a person from Botswana would treasure. The book tells so many heartwarming, simple mysteries - and then the mystery about the witch doctor and the abduction of the little boy is absolutely terrifying but has a sweet happy ending. Many such detective stories interwoven in daily life in Botswana.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency?

When the school teacher meets his boy after Mma Ramotswe brings him back. Most memorable moment. Also, when at the end of the book she agrees to marry Mr J.L.B. Matekoni. Absolutely unforgettable!

Have you listened to any of Lisette Lecat’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This was my first listen to Lisette Lecat - I plan on listening to more. It was a great performance.

If you could rename The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, what would you call it?

Precious Lady Detective

Any additional comments?

Have you listened to any of Robert Fass’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is the only one I have listened to.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Extremely happy- I am a scientist myself who shares the same passion.
